Favourite Sci-Fi movie!

Shades of grey. Shades of grey. You math types use the other part of your brains. :) :Drogar-Evil(DBG): :Drogar-Dum(DBG):

Gonna have to chalk this one up to difference of opinion; or thought process. :zombie_smiley:

I think I liken your spin as simple as a vampire hunter inventing tools to kill the vampires before they take over the world.

Ghosthunters invent tools to capture ghosts. Again, SCIFI is such an afterthought in this film as much as the potential for horror is.

Scifi ?

No way !

What's more black and white, and less grey, then proclaiming that Ghostbusters just simply isn't sci-fi, period, end of discussion? It's you who's posting the absolutes ("it's a comedy, period") and refusing to consider the in-betweens (like it being both).

In fact

I think we have to stop holding onto definitions and Wiki so much (I've been guilty of it)

Not everything is black and white. We have to look in the areas of grey (of which not everyone is capable of doing).

=

It's pretty simple:

Does it feel like a science fiction movie ? Does it taste like one ?

I don't think so.

So sci-fi is like pornography...can't define it, but I know it when I see it!

Haha Batutta

Funny but true ?

What I said was, it's off the cuff. An afterthought. Barely on the curve.

Do I think it's SCIFI ? No way. Doesn't even resemble the model for the genre but will allow it to be subcategorized in my mind.

No, what you said was:

Ghostbusters is most definite not Science Fiction

Ghostbusters is straight up comedy. Nothing more, nothing less.

Respectfully disagreeing no matter which definition is found.

Doesn't sound like "shades of grey" to me.

Doesn't even resemble the model for the genre
Like I said, find me the definition it doesn't fit.

As for the vampire hunter and his weapons, well, any space ship is like any wooden vessel. Any alien is just like any unkown person or aninal -- friend or enemy. Roy Batty is any other remorseless killer with daddy issues.

I'll be even more clear so we can put this part of the convo to rest:

I do not consider it Scifi anymore than I would consider it horror or action.

The elements are there for it to be Scifi if embracing definitions of Science and Apocalypse and Otherwordly Dimensions but the elements are indeed there to be a horror film as well. And no one in their sanest mind would call GB horror.

Scifi (By most normal peoples standards) include

time travel
outer space
other worlds
lasers
aliens
robots
utopia
distopia
the future
alternative parallels times
technology or scientific principles that contradict known laws of nature
and on and on

I absolutely love this from Wiki (gasp).

Science fiction is difficult to define, as it includes a wide range of subgenres and themes. Author and editor Damon Knight summed up the difficulty by stating that "science fiction is what we point to when we say it"

Or even better, Battutas analogy of porn; we know it when we see it.

So the real question Dave, is not whether or not I think it is Scifi, but do you think of Scifi when you look at it ?

Ghostbusters is definitely scifi, but like most movies, it fits into multiple genres. But I 'think' comedy would be it's primary genre, among others.

Well, let's see, we got whiz-bang technology, parallel dimensions, an impending apocalypse, ultimately warded off by technology which doesn't exist . . . so yeah, I do see sci-fi. And I'm hardly alone.

As I said, I'm not the one trying to lock it into a single categorical box. So I'm exploring the shades of grey. Jump in. It's more fun in here. :)

John, I'm usually with you on these kind of arguments but not with this or golf. :)

Prior to today, when I thought of Ghostbusters, did Sci-Fi come to mind? No. However, thinking about the concepts involved and the filmmakers own definition of the movie, I am willing to admit that it contains science fiction attributes thereby allowing for a sci-fi classification. To me, it's a week link, but a link nonetheless. It's primarily a comedy. Primarily.

Nor am I. But even calling it Sci Fi Comedy is a stretch.

Can we call DIE HARD Action / Comedy ? But what about all of the laughs we get from the film ? Get the gist ? But it was funny, you say. Yes, but it is action.

My point on that one (if even exaggerated) is, the elements and amount of science fiction in the film is so neglible, so minute, that attaching the category to the film in the first place is pointless.

Looks like SCIFI ? no

Smells like SCIFI ? no

Tastes like SCIFI ? no

Subcatted w/ Scifi ? (Shrugs) I guuueesss. But does it warrant mentioning Scifi in the same breath as the films title ?

Like ............. it's comedy. Period. First and foremost. Who cares how many subgenres apply ?

Let's call it a Scifi Comedy Action Romance. Doesn't seem to work does it ?

I'm happy to be in the minority on these things Dave, trust me.

Liner Note:

I thought about what Battuta said regarding Porn; and then thought of Brown Bunny (is that the name of the film?) and decided; no. Not porn at all despite the graphic nature of the sex.

That may be a good way to view this one ?

Actually, I'd call Ghostbusters a Horror-Comedy before calling it a Sci-Fi comedy. I don't find it remotely horrifying now, but when I was 12, parts of it scared me.

Dude, the sci-fi is (for the third time) the premise of the film. The guys invent technology which make them able to hunt and trap ghosts. It's not just some throwaway gag, like the jokes in an action movie. If they can't catch the ghosts, they don't have a story. That's hardly "negligible" or "minute." It's the fabric of the script.

(And just about every reference/description I can find of the movie calls it some variation of sci-fi comedy.)

From Wiki:

Ghostbusters (titled on-screen as Ghost Busters) is a 1984 sci-fi-comedy film about three eccentric New York City parapsychologists-turned-ghost exterminators. The film was released in the United States on June 8, 1984. It was produced and directed by Ivan Reitman and stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Rick Moranis, Sigourney Weaver, Annie Potts, and Ernie Hudson. The film's original release grossed almost US$230 million in the U.S. and $50 million abroad during its theatrical run, making it the biggest grossing film of 1984.[1]

Lets agree to disagree already!

...now for the important issue... Golf IS a sport!
If you don't agree, ask yourself these questions:

1. When was the last time you watched a baseball GAME, a basketball GAME or a football GAME? Are these not considered sports?

2. Why is Tiger Woods widely considered by sports professionals to be the greatest athlete of all time? (this would include Michael Jordan)

...and if you want to use the 'but there's no head-to-head competition' argument...

3. Wouldn't that make gymnastics a game too?
