Favorite Production Quote

"Got... to... go". Heard often at a sarcastic level when all departments are ready, yet, for some reason, there is no filming happening and no immediately recognizable reason for why.

"Shoot the s*** out of it" or "We're going to shoot the *hit out of it" or "I totally shot the *hit out of that!" Coined by me in 1997, though everyone takes credit for this. See also "ginormous", Baywatch and Webkinz toys. Not bitter... not bitter... not bitter...

Heard recently on a feature film from the 1st AD when a large number of balloons left their marks in a massive, wind-induced migration: "Balloons back to one". Picture the entire crew chasing balloons around a backyard as this came through the radio.

"Is that on fire?"

(The greenscreen started to catch fire :-/ )

A variation on that theme, from the set of Evan Almighty...

"Wow, that fire sure looks realistic!"

...followed by a full-court-sirens-blaring-hoses-and-axes press by the Universal fire brigade, and a 12'x14' hole burned through the side of Stage 27...

Director: "Did you study the scene"
Actor: "I never study, I remember everything"

Director: "Scene 5 Take 107"

Favorite?

A couple that are always nice to hear...

"That's a wrap"
Or alternatly (more commonly) in TV land..
"Studio Clear"

Nice! , We started ours with a Treadmill...

During a break between shots (and a tense moment\overnight shoot) one of my PA's said: "Do you wanna see me dance like Mick Jagger?"

This happened on a set my friend was camera oping on:

Shooting in a Baptist Church in the south, filled with extras.... as soon as the scene was finished up the Key Grip, wanting to break down quickly, screamed at the crew to get the duvatyne off the windows....except he didn't say "get the duvatyne off the windows"
Instead, not thinking about it, he yelled out, "I want these blacks out of here!"

Being a Baptist Church in the south - every single extra was black.
And not too happy.

Once it was explained and everyone understood what he meant, the entire set burst into laughter.

Including people who are not shooting the sh*t out of the movie, so much as shooting the sh*t into it...

We had us some hot tasty fun on Apollo 13, when the helicopter guys came in too close to the splashdown capsule (which had these big-ass spherical balloons mounted on top; floatation/righting gear) and the rotor wash started blowing the capsule out to sea...until the mounting lines parted and these three big custom-made, custom-finished balloons go bouncing across the water, heading out into the Pacific...GET THE F'ING BALLOONS! GET 'EM!

...good times.

I was working on a shoot a few years ago and the DP and I were just off set while several clients and the producer/director were going on and on about a simple little shot...spending way too much time talking...anyway the DP turns to me and says (just a bit too loudly) "You know, its kind of like watching a bunch of monkeys trying to f*** a basketball."

Balloons and basketballs... both kinda round when you think about it. The monkey observation is true, so true.

When we are short on time and I"m wearing my Steadi I'm told "Come here and be my tripod"

That's what the vest's break-away-cord is for! Learn to recognize when the "tripod" request is coming and pull it quick before they get a chance to speak.
