FAQ Fast tele zoom or prime: a hard choice

My experience is that every time I owned a super Tele zoom I almost never used them it’s usually a lens you end up leaving in the car. I find that getting a very sharp prime around 135mm f2 in combo with SB and Center crop ends up being more useful. I would go with a rokinon cine 135mm t2 its around usd 500 it’s very very sharp long manual focus and aperture and size/weight Weise similar to your canon zooms.

This is what makes video so cool in my opinion. There's just so many different ways to skin a cat and none are right or wrong. See, I'm the opposite of you. I bring primes along with my longer zooms and I tend to use my long zooms more than anything else. In fact, I'd say my most used lens is my 100-400 MK II, followed by my 70-200 MK II. I love the look they give and having the range for wildlife without a speed booster is pretty awesome too.

In the end, video is all about creativity and what feels right to you. If moldcad did choose to go the 70-200 route, I think he would love it. But perhaps he would love a long prime too.

When I leave the house with my F55, I generally have the 17-120 on the camera, a Pelican with all of my CN-E primes and the 70-200 is in the support backpack with the batteries, on-cam monitor, matte box, etc. So, for what it's worth, I have $60K+ of great cine glass, but I still, almost 100% of the time, carry the EF 70-200 2.8 L IS II with me.

As far as durability of the EF 70-200, I've owned my copy since the v2 came out(2011?) and I've never had an issue with it. I have seen lots of the GL Optics versions fall apart, though.

I'd love to have a set of CN-E primes but I can't justify it financially. I'm building a set of Contax instead.

Lol. But you know the picture I was trying to paint. Even with all of the "dedicated" glass I have, the 70-200 is still a great and versatile lens to have in your arsenal.

Would love to own a set of those primes myself.... but I'm still shooting on the vers 1 of my 70-200mm lens. Mine performs lovely on my FS7... imo it's the perfect sharpness for 4K faces

To those of you who have the Canon 7-200mm F2.8 mk2: is anyone using it with the Speed Booster? This is an extremely important factor for me, as this lens I want to use with all 3 of my cameras, and none of them is Canon :) I already have SB Ultra (for Sony E-mount - FS7 and A7Rii), as well as SB EF->M43 (XL, i.e. 0.64x) for use with my GH5. With the price tag of this lens, the universality provided by Speed Boosters is crucial so let me ask you how is the combo working?

From experience I know that Metabones can work brilliantly with some EF lenses, but also can be a total failure others; on Metabones site they have a compatibility tables and the Canon 70-200 F2.8 mk2 not only is listed there as tested, but it even is one of the very few lens models marked with an asterisk - meaning that it supports smooth iris. How is the reality? TIA

I use mine with a SB all the time. Zero issues so far. The iris works great as does everything else (IS, metadata, etc.) You’ll find it also works great on your A7RII.

Works fine with speedbooster, but my advice is if you only have the speed booster for your lenses you are being penny wise and pound foolish. Get a standard Metabones adapter as well. It allows you to have 2 ranges for all your lenses and often you may want the longer range. Also consider if anything happens and for some reason your speed booster stop working ( its known to happen with any adapter that has electronic coupling), the you still have your backup. I use both my adapters about 50% of the time with each. Especially valuable with primes as its like 2 lenses for the price of 1.

Excellent idea, Lenny! Thanks; I've thought about it man times but could decide between Metabones and Sigma MC-11 adapters...

Methinks you remind me of a Danish gentleman of long ago - "To buy or not to buy....."
Do you have trouble in the pharmacy between brands of toothpaste?
(Actually I confess to checking amazon between brands far too often in the supermarket.)

Lenny, I do hamletize a lot in life, I must confess. However, only on the matters of a greater importance than toothpaste :)

PS. Back to the merits - I've seen a tone of YT videos, comparing the Sigma MC-11 and Metabones non-boosting adapters with various EF lenses (by Canon and Sigma mainly). Really, the feedback is so mixed and inconclusive that if I consider the MC-11 at all is mainly for price reasons; what is your guys opinion on which is "generally better"? The problem with all those comparison videos is the testers mainly focus on Auto Focus functionality, which for me is not the most important aspect at all (One Push AF and One Push AE is all I need - but they must be spot-on; the IS is far more important particularly with IBIS and lens OIS)....
