FAST SDHC Memory for the EX1

Just confirming!! Got my e-films MxR Reader on time, used with my CLASS 2 Ultra II Sandisk 16GB, after media format is working perfectly!

I tested 1 minute recording in 720/24p~48p (overcranking), no errors.

Right now I'm testing 1080/24p, I left it recording. If something weird ever happens I'll come back to report.

So, 3 things:

1) E-films is reliable, order.
2) Class 2 Ultra II SanDisks can work.
3) E-films + Class 2 Ultra II SanDisk works.

EDIT PS: shouldn't this thread be sticky?

Today I received the e-4 films MxR Reader, we tested with SanDisk sdhc 16gb, I filmed 30 minutes each card, everything is perfet. Thank's team-films,Marius

I am finally getting my EX up to date on firmware for use with Sandisc cards.

I thought the best type was the Ultra 3 16g 30mb.
Why all the talk about Ultra 2?
Is there a link that shows the correct card?

It is the Ultra IIs most everyone is using. You can spend more on the Extreme III if you want but it will might only give you faster offload speed, no difference in capture.

Sony EX1 KXS combo confirmed working from UK .

Sony EX1 KXS combo confirmed working from UK .

In response to all the questions in regards to KxS and Sandisk ultra 2 cards, I have the following and can confirm no issues with EX1, it behaves exactly the same as Sony SXS .I have been hammering the camera with the cards and trying to get it to error, and the camera has only ever once given a media error over the past week.

Sony EX1 with the v1.11 firmware
1- 4x Kensington 7 in 1 K33407 - Bought from misco.co.uk
2- 4x Sandisk 16gb SDHC Ultra 2 cards ( Class 2 on packaging / card ) 15mbps
3- Can read at full resolution and screen on both pc and Mac Pro, using an SDHC card reader or USB to Expresscard Adaptor by Apiotek.
4- Can import directly from card in FCP2 and CS3- newest update for MAc CS3 has profile for Sony EX1 / SXS at all resolutions.

I have managed to shave all the SD cards without any problems and can close door on EX1, thus avoiding any dust getting into slots.

The cards total 64 GB in total giving me 4 hours of full 1920 x 1080p, at a total cost of around £250. UK, less than a Sony SxS 8GB !

Thanks guys, Have done much research before commiting to KxS and your forum has been of great help.

PS..,I have taken rolling photos for the steps needed to shave the cards - Whilst holding my breath ! .

Has anyone tried the Transcend 16 GB SDHC SD Class 6 .... I bought 4 and am wondering if I made a bad choice.

Got my 2 MxR cards this afternoon from e-Films, they work perfectly with my SanDisk Ultra II cards in my EX-3... Thanks go to Ross from e-Films!

Yes , the Transcend do work,a few people have reported that they do occasionally give a media error. Only thing is if you have an EX1 and Kensington E/Card then I dont think the card can be cut / shaved to enable door to close.

The Sandisk sdhc ultra 2 16gb 15mbps are the ones everyone seems to be going for.

That's good to hear, Faz. I bought 4 e-films cards. I didn't get the Sandisk because of someone's comments about their "4" class status. Someone posted on Amazon that they use the Transcends with their Panny and it works great.

Hi Jeff,

My Sandisk cards are 'class 2 ' as marked on the card and packaging, but they perform to the same standard as the 'class 4 ' range , 15mbps.

I have had no problen in using them in my EX1.

The cards are the same, the move from Class 4 to Class 2 is a marketing move only, you could almost say these are really Class 15 cards..... (if their was such a class).

I agree, thats more or less what my local Sandisk rep says. They outperform thier class when compared to other class 2 and 4 sdhc.

I'm not sure if everyone has seen this, but Tom's Hardware did a test of SDHC cards recently, and here are the results..

I haven't tested them all, so can't give any guidance apart from Sandisk, Transcend, and some Kingston, (some pass some fail). Apart from that I don't know if these cards will work with the EX-series, but some are very cheap. You could almost record on Sandisk, and offload to a no-name brand for archive, they are so cheap.

BTW I bought some no-name brands, and they vary between fair to plain flat out useless. Problem is they all look the same. If you are buying off ebay, I'd be careful as the risk is high that you too will be the recipient of a very pretty but useless card. Probably better to use a known dealer with a return policy.

Thats why the only sensible option is to stick to the Sandisk Ultra II (or Extreme III/Transcend Class 6). Most others seem to have variations in cards that means that while they might benchmark in a single card test, you never know what you will get in your shrink wrap. The Patriot is a classic example of this, it benchmarks well but is known to be unreliable and has been on my 'uncompatible' list on my compatibility chart for a long time now.

The point I was making though, is that any brand apart from Sandisk, Transcend and some Kingston, can still get a look in, but not as capture media, but are perfectly ok as backup media for those who don't want to use, or wish to supplement hard drives as their permanent storage medium. I know many doco makers are looking for solutions to this problem.

If the test results were used in the context of making a permanent backup copy of camera wilds, then they are very useful, because the only figure you need to know about is the speed, and of course cost.

As a backup perhaps, but others have reported long term storage issues on some cheaper cards, you just have to read user reviews on media around the web so for those important clips, I'd still make sure you have somethingyou can be confidant in.

Personally I'd rather see Sony sell the U1 drive for a sensible price and update that firmware for data storage like they have been promising for about a year now... Then use XDCAM as achive media.

Mine work just fine. came with a USB reader that works fine also. 16GB– 16min download time.

Kerry Brown
Which reader is giving you that download speed? Are you removing the Transcend card from the Expresscard adapter?

I'm getting a much slower download speed from the camera to the computer using the Sony XDCAM EX ClipBrowser software via USB.

The camera is a slow reader, I use a Lexar Pro Dual media reader (CF+SDHC) & get the 15/16min download of an Ultra II 16GB as well.

Do you have any links I could follow, I'd be interested to get some more info on this?
