FAST SDHC Memory for the EX1

Has anyone tried the 16GB Delkin SDHC?
You're right, we need to know the extent of the error. Is it the media restore (which is usually speed related), or the media error.

When I tried using the Delkin 32gb it would say format media. When attempting to it just wouldn't happen.I would get a "unrecognizable media error".I did notice the 32gb card was a class 4 as to where the 16gb delkin cards are a class 6, and those work great. Been shooting with the delkin 16gb pro cards with no problems.
I am wondering if they make a 32 gb class 6 card if that would fix the problem.

Just a guess..... The camera may not have the firmware for any 32 gig card. Just a thought. We've been going through this "race" in stills for years.

True.
It appears the Delkin 32GB SDHC is one of the SDHC cards that will not work with the combo.
I'm not surprised, afterall there were many 16GB SDHC that also do not work. Which is why we did all this testing and discovered the Transcend, SanDisk Ultra II and Extreme III cards.
The upcoming 32GB SanDisk Ultra II should work.

I have just discussed with Delkin their different cards and the various versions on the market, it appears I got the cards the wrong way around in release dates. Here is the official report: The compatible card with the eFilm logo that allows the card to mount flush is the OLD model. The non compatible version with the 'DD' Delkin Device logo that the SD card sticks well out of is the NEW model. The new model has only been on the market for about 1-2months which explains why there is still a lot of the old model around. Delkin are investigating the possibility of resurrecting the old model for our purposes. I should have an update from Delkin by about Wed/Thur about this card so please hang in their for a little while. To date Delkin have been excellent to liase with and they seem to fully appreciate what these cards mean to us as EX shooters. As soon as I know more, you will too.

Is this a good deal? I purchased two Sandisk Extreme III 16GB cards for about $77 (assuming I am getting my $33 cash back from Microsoft). Has anyone tested overcrank to 720/24p 48fps with the Extreme III 16GB?

I have one Extreme III as well as several Ultra II and Transcend 16gb cards. The performance with the more expensive Extreme III, as has been noted on the boards, is not substantially different from the Ultra II or Transcend Class 6 cards. The bottleneck is the USB transfer on Sony's end.

If you have a card reader spefically designed to take advantage of the Extreme III's 30MBps ability it would read off very quickly though. 1GB would take about 35sec so a 16GB card would offload in about 9min which is very close to practical SxS offload speeds.

Hi, I haven't posted for a long time as I've been searching for alternative manufacturers for the cards. Just to go back to my original post - I ended up getting a few samples from manufacturers but as it happened, they did work because, the manufacturers sent me samples which were not redesigned. That's where my communication with this company ended.

However, I traced a company which as we speak are re-tooling (which I've already paid for it) the production for the new card where they are going to use a push-in/push-out device and redesigned to my specifications. The card works and is going to be available at a far cheaper price than Delkin or other KXS solution available at the moment. The whole idea of this project was to bring reasonably cheap priced cards to everyone who wants them. Not only that, but, I negotiated new 16 and 32GB express cards to be available on the market, priced far cheaper than any Sandisk memory.

I cannot put a date on this as yet as I opened my mouth before thinking I had something on the way but it didn't eventuate so this time, I'll await the arrival of the first shipment of the cards and I'll let everyone know where they can be obtained but it should be soon.

Yes it is happening and there's no turning back and I know from a fact that there are more people other than myself who are doing exactly the same thing and all I can say is good luck to them! The more cards on the market means more competition - cheaper prices and a win/win for anyone who will decide to purchase one.

I looked through Guy B's blog regarding 18 in 1 express card adaptor (generic Chinese) which he claims does not work, believe me it does as I have one and I got it recommended from Ross from DV info forum who put me onto it, but as any card on the market the card sticks out too much but works the same way as Kensington card and I know from a few other people who can swear that, that card works. So Guy B must have got some dodgey card from his supplier because everyone I know or heard of has had no issue with it.

Marek

The card I have definetly has problems. It is more with something like the initialisation of the card than the throughput or anything. More times than not, when I inserted it into the EX1 it either ignored the combo completely or occasionaly it would give an 'invalid media' and sometimes it would work. This is very similar behaviour to what others have reported happens with the SIIG card.

When I tried to benchmark the combo today, the same thing happened on the laptop. All the other cards worked first time, this generic one causes the same detection problems over and over, it took some time to get it to a point I could benchmark it.

I ordered two of them and still have the other one in its packaging untested.

On the other hand the UNITEK reader I got off eBay appears to be fine, it just stick the card out a long way.

When benchmarked, all the cards benchmarked with VERY similar results. This included the Delkin, Kensington, UNITEK and the unbranded 18-In-1. I do want to publish those results but at the moment I have little time to put them all together in a way that would mean anything.

I will test the other copy of the generic card, but I won't hold my breath.

I am not worried about the cost difference of the cards, its almost irrelevant when it comes to the massive savings the total package costs and it isn't an ongoing cost like media, once you have a few readers thats all you will need.

I just opened the second reader of the same generic one and indeed found it is much better behaved. So far with about 6 or 7 insert/ejects on both the laptop and the EX1 it always recognised the media.

It does trouble me however that the other one is problematic, my concern is more of quality control over the manufacture of them. Definetly need a lot of testing by more people to get real statistics.

I took the back of the generic no brand and the UNITEK and the both use the same GL827 controller. The board layout and SD connector are slightly different but very similar, and quite similar to the Kensington

I tried to take the back of the Delkin but couldn't get it all the way off (its my only one and didn't want to damage it). The contruction is higher end with adhesive added to hold the shell together. I could see down into it and the layout is very different and I could not see the same processor. The push/eject connector does take up a suprising amount of internal real estate and is definetly a more complicated connector, I can see why most manufacturers have not used it.

I looked back at that photo on that other web board with the Kensington and another card open and I am thinking the other card is the new Delkin as it is almost identical to what I saw. Can't find that post in the thread though, way to long..

There have been a few Kensingtons DOA but not many at all from all reports, and there are a lot of cards out there.

Hi Guy,

To be fair on the Generic cards and one being a dud, I have a Sony SxS 16GB that my laptop sometimes has troubles recognising, but I don't then go and say all 16GB SxS cards have problems and shouldn't be trusted. Just that card in one laptop, that's all. Plenty of people are using those cards and I have not heard one problem from any of them.

The cost of the cards do matter to some people. I tried to import a Delkin from Amazon and it was going to cost me over AUD$100! I could buy the same generic card for under AUD$30. That means adding a Sandisk UltraII for AUD$75 I can have an up and running replacement for the SxS for just over $100. At that rate I can afford to think of the cards + SDHC as one unit, and forget about swapping SDHC cards. Not so with the more expensive Kensington/Delkin cards, if you can get them.

If you re-read my post I clearly said that these cards need more user feeback to provide more meaningful statistical data. It didn't exactly impress me to start with but the second card certainly shows promise. Unfortunately for both these cards, the amount the SD card sticks out is way too much for anything but work off a tripod. Carrying the camera could easily swipe the card across your leg and cause some form of damage, either to the card or the camera. They can work maybe as a temporaty measure until the Delkin or Marek's come online. The fact that more and more readers work is only a good thing as we all know.

If Marek's reader comes out and is flush, problem solved.

As for cost, it depends much more on the mark up of the dealer and the freight than the cost of the card (don't forget out exchange rate sux at the moment too). Importing a single card from the US is unlikely to be great value, and I bet Marek's one will be fairly similar, freight will cost as much or more than that card depending on the cards packaging (I did get 5 Kensingtons freighted from the US to me for US$9 by taking them out of their packaging though and that is where we need to go, who needs to pay for pretty box's?)

Check out the page now, I have created a new category in the compatibility list (other options) and moved a few products into it.
