FAST SDHC Memory for the EX1

"The Chinese are taking over the world.....wonder if they could make Sony EX3 clones and sell them at 1/10 the price too?"

As long as you are OK with tainted video's.

I just want to say a big thanks to everyone who discovered, tested, posted the KxS solution. And extra thanks to GuyB for making it all very clear on his site. I just bought an EX1 for this reason. After calling about 10 different places, I was able to get 2 of the Kensington readers. They said they were the last few and I think I should have got more. I've also shaved the 16GB cards down and my door closes.

I got the camera just this week but was surprised to find the old 1.03 firmware. I bought from B&H and figured their inventory turnover is probably one of the highest so I would definitely get the 1.11 models. But no problem because thanks again to the DVXusers and especially GuyB for the link, I was able to upgrade myself.

THANKS THANKS THANKS

THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH

And that about summaries the current EX user base, a merry band of brothers! We all love our cameras but hate SxS prices so if all this doesn't send a very clear message to big brother 'S' then there is really no hope... Treat us as partners with your in your product base growth and we all win, force our hand and we take this direction whenever possible.

Does anyone know how to make a difference in is a Sandisk 16gb with a chip and two cip.I want to buy 4 pieces with a single chip, to cut and may close the door to EX1 :-)
thanks

you need to look at the back of the card and see if you can see the chip contacts, as in the shaving KxS video. That is generally a problem as the cards are in sealed plastic containers.

Hi,

I just received my Kensington Media Reader today. All I have is a 2GIG SanDisk Extreme III from my Canon photo camera. I formatted the card using Mac Disk Utility to MS-DOS Format. And when I put it in the EX1 I get a Media error...

Is it because I did something wrong or because the card is too small?

Thanks !

it might be too small, try just formatting it to standard FAT32, I assume a Mac can do that? You might have formatted it to FAT16 using a 'MS-DOS' tool.

Yeah I formatted the card in Windows and it still says Unknown Media... I hope it's the card which is too small! I'll order a 16gig tonight.

How much needs to be removed?
I do not have an EX1, but from looking at some pics, it looks like the door can be dremmeled smooth to allow the door to shut.

Does the door have raised bumps on the inside that can be smoothed flat?

To me it always looked like the SD card pretty much aligns with the edge of the cover so you couldn't just slice a groove in it.

Check out the new option for EX1 users on my page below, DxS

Guy,

Just got a look at your terrific page. Very thorough background and assessment of product.

I have been working with a couple of Transcend Class 6 16gb cards and I really feel that they are ready for prime time at this point. No problems yet.

One minor question-- you note that SanDisk has 32gb cards on the way in both Ultra II and Extreme III. I was under the impression that SanDisk had only announced the Ultra II's.

Good work!

Ned Soltz

Thanks Ned,

I remember the initial hit rate with transcend felt like about 50/50 which is still in the back of my head even when I read of so many people not having a problem with them now. I am getting closer to moving this card to the 'compatible' status, I'll just wait to see how they go with the Delkin (DxT). If I don't hear any problems they will probably go up. I have a feeling the initial problems were due to different Transcends being tested but no one was saying which ones they were testing, just using the brand name where as the Sandisk were always the Ultra II or Extreme III (although I have seen a report of the VideoHD card working fine too but the Ultra II makes it somewhat redundant as it is a bit cheaper) but I guess it would be good to know in a bind you could pick one up at a mass merchant and shoot to it.

PS: I have removed reference to the 32GB Extreme III, not sure why I had it there.

Had my first ever KxS glitch tonight. I got a media error (needs restor) on KxS. I missed 4 seconds of footage, which was as long as it took me to see the message, comprehend it, notice it had switched slots but not started recording again so I hit the rec button.

Switched over to DxS which powered on. I will have to do some extensive tests on this card before I can trust it again and put it down to a glitch which could have happened with SxS (some have reported this happen to even SxS).

I don't think it is really any form of inherent problem with KxS or SxS as I was only recording in SP, which is really unlikely to stress these cards.

Thanks for the update Guy (and all your work in making sure the EX1/EX3 community knows all the ins and outs of KxS etc.) Let's hope it was a one off glitch.

So based on Kensington cards apparently not available what are the best recommended cards at this time?

Van tested a Delkin 32GB SDHC card and it didn't work, perhaps he could detail if it was a detection problem, or a failure during recording. It would be interesting to test this card however, as it could give us some insight into 32GB SDHC compatibility. If the Delkin 16GB card works fine but the 32GB doesn't I wonder what that could mean for the 32GB Sandisk Ultra II comming out soon.
