GH2 fast run'n'gun zoom (around f2.8) for gh2 in 4/3 or ETC mode (any more options?)

Does the OIS work with the adapter on GH1 or 2?

that's the whole point- you get OIS.
that's what i was trying to tell you, and it's written in the link.
you need the 4/3 to m4/3 adapter (from Panny or Olympus) so the OIS works on GH's :)

That's like $1K. If I were you, I'd sell it before the rumored 12-50mm 2.5-3.3 is announced officially. March/April/May? I don't know. But the time flies fast... and faster. When GH2 was announced, the sales of GH1 must have been dried up. See what happens to the price of new GH1. Falling like a rock.

Optically I'm sure 14-50 is super. But 12mm would be very useful. 12mm has 17% more FOV than 14mm's. Mega O.I.S is sorta old tech. Panasonic's compact cameras have Power O.I.S. that doubles image stabilization ability of Mega O.I.S. Most of all the new lens is gonna be smaller. The small factor is important for me for run'n'gun style. Yes faster AF. Prolly faster than 14-140mm. 20mm pancake is great for candid... but slow AF.

Currently 14-42mm 3.5-5.6 can be bought cheap as a kit lens. It's not optically great but good enough in good lighting. Then upgrade to 12-50... when PD ships... 2011 summer? 2012 spring? haha

I am waiting for the 12-50mm. I will sell my 14mm F2.5 pancake and the 14-140mm when that lens is offered. I have the 45-200mm for the longer range shots.

They never formally promised anything, right. But at Photokina 2010 they did say they have a "bright zoom" "under consideration" (along with a bright wide angle and a 25mm f1.4):

http://www.43rumors.com/ft5-here-is-the-panasonic-fast-lens-25mm-f1-4/

The rumoured 12-50mm f2.5-3.3 is very well in line with these "considerations", so I think there is a high probability this rumour is correct.
You guys do know that Panasonic has never, ever said anything about any forthcoming 12-60 lens, right?

Right. Somehow the mention on a slide of a "bright zoom" that is "under consideration" has somehow morphed into people actually expecting a product and even "specifications(!)"

Hey, I'm not saying such a product won't exist. I just think it's profoundly premature and really nothing more than wishful thinking. If people are actually "waiting" for such a product, which has (AFAIK) never been mentioned, discussed, or even hinted at by the company, well, that seems... I don't know, overly optimistic?

If you want a lens like that, Olympus already makes one -- a 12-60, with f/2.8 on the wide end.

I think a 12-50 with an f/2.5 aperture would be highly desirable -- but that doesn't mean it's real, or that it's coming. Just figured that there should be a bit of a reality check put on this rumor. No such product has been announced, and speculation of such a product has never been confirmed by the company as far as I know. It exists only in the mind of one rumor site as of this time.

I agree, why wait for a 12-50 f2.5-3.3 when there are 14-54 f2.8-3.5 and 12-60 f2.8-4 available right now? Seems the f2.5 lens would only be about 1/3 of a stop faster than the 14-54 which is only about 1/3 of a stop faster for most of its range than the 12-60... Why wait for a 1/3 of a stop in a lens with unknown performance and an unknown price that may or may not even exist?

Plus I bet that 1/3 stop will double the price... If you really need a 1/3 stop get the 14-54 instead of the 12-60, its half the price...

It is not just the bright lens we are willing to wait for. I personally want a bright lens, with great AF, and the Power IS. I could easily buy one of the 4/3s lenses but they just won't focus fast enough or provide the IS I am looking for. In the meantime I will just use the 14-140mm or a fast prime and a tripod.

I think that at best a fast zoom is 1 year away from hitting the shelves but I think it will happen before the end of 2012. Right now I am content to wait that long for the right lens.

One thing to rember is that almost every single new lens has been released with a camera that can take advantage of its new capabilities. The 14-140mm came with the GH1. The smaller 20mm pancake was released with the GF1. The even smaller 14mm was released in conjunction with the GF2 in Japan. The lighter 14-42mm was released with the G2/G10 so that they could claim how light it was.

If they make a 12-50mm it will have to be in conjunction with a new video centric m4/3s camera. Maybe an AF200 next year?

and what? wait for ever? besides i got it at a bargain price (250$)

Okay, that makes all the difference in the world. You're shooting now, and hoping for something better in the future -- that's a rational approach. Sometimes it seems like people are just sitting on their hands, waiting for something new to come out, and then they'll get started. That kind of thinking is what I don't understand.

I'm right there with you -- I'd love a faster HD-optimized zoom, that'd be great. The 14-140 is far from perfect, but it's the best we've got right now, and so I'm using it, and it works. But it could be better.

Those two wouldn't have anything to do with each other. The AF100 (and any future AF200) come from the pro division, the lenses come from the consumer company. I know some people don't quite get it when I say this, but -- they're two separate companies. I've visited the broadcast division factory in Osaka -- the consumer company is nowhere to be seen. They're a totally different entity. Panasonic Consumer Electronics has about as much in common with Panasonic Broadcast, as the Panasonic Rice Cooker division does.

If a new lens is going to be introduced with a new camera, you can bet it would be a G-series consumer camera...

Wow. How?

got lucky, had an opportunity. well, actually it should have been around 500$ but it had some slow AF behavior i got 50% off (i personally don't need AF)
look at every photo forum for sells... indeed, ebay has mostly the mint 1K$ ones.

Why wait the rumored 12-50 forever? Just get one from 14-42, 14-45, 14-140, 14-54, 14-50, 12-60.

It's fallacy to believe the rumor 100%. Also it's fallacy to ignore the rumor 100%.

14-42 isn't the best m43 lens, but it's good enough to last a year. Save the bullets and get ready to buy a pro zoom lens.

Those who got 14-140 already didn't mistake either. It's a good lens.

Lucky you. But I need fast AF for candid photography, too. 14-42 is a decent lens. Center sharpness. Relatively fast and quiet AF.

Barry,

Do you think they will ever make an AFxxx focused lens? I would imagine that eventually they will want to make a good fast AF zoom lens for it. I sure hope we don't have to wait 1 year after the lens is announced for it to come out like we did for the 14mm pancake.

Is size and weight of the lens an important factor for you? Would you use a fast zoom lens if it was as big and heavy as a DSLR lens?

Well, how? What would be different?

I mean, if I was looking for a lens made specifically for the AF100, I'd want it to be light, fast, and have exquisite manual controls. And I don't think there's any chance of the consumer factory turning out a lens like that. The consumer lenses are all about better and nicer auto functions -- which, by the way, does make sense. Yesterday the brightest, reddest cardinal I've ever seen jumped on my bird feeder. I looked around and saw the GH2 there, and it had the Voigtlander 25mm lens on it. I figured "eh, it's wide, but it'll work", right? Of course it didn't work, it was ridiculous trying to get the shot and fumbling with all the manual controls. I pulled the lens off, slapped on my 100-300, and got about a dozen shots in the next thirty seconds.

Lumix lenses are made by the consumer company, for that customer. But on my AF100, I *greatly* prefer my Compact Primes over anything else I've got. CP's and the Voigtlander are almost all I use on it.

So, do I think the Lumix line will include an AF100-centered lens? I would seriously doubt it. I'd love to see a well-integrated, fast, OIS, fast-focusing, smooth-zooming, wonderful-focusing lens, and who knows -- maybe that rumored 12-50 would be such a thing. But I don't think they'll make it specifically for the AF100, I think they'd make it for their Lumix cameras and if AF100 users find it useful, then that's just a bonus for them. But not their target market.

I sure hope we don't have to wait 1 year after the lens is announced for it to come out like we did for the 14mm pancake.
See, that's another thing that makes me scratch my head about this supposed 12-50 f/2.5 lens. The 14mm pancake was announced and then it took how long to come out? I don't know if it was a year, but it was a long wait. And the "rumored" 12-50 hasn't even been announced yet! If there is such a lens, you can probably bet that it's at least a year away.

To everyone: stop waiting and start shooting.

Is size and weight of the lens an important factor for you? Would you use a fast zoom lens if it was as big and heavy as a DSLR lens?
On the GH2, weight and size mean a lot. On the AF100, not so much. On the GH2, I find myself loving and craving the 20mm pancake -- it's just "right-sized" for the GH2. But I don't use it that much on the AF100, I use the Voigtlander instead. And even then, that feels small. The Compact Primes are about right-sized for the AF100. They're about 2 pounds, with big meaty focus rings and iris rings and a good solid size. But -- that's me, and my style of shooting. I like tripods. I don't go in for much handheld; if I did, I wouldn't want to use the AF100 for it, I'd rather use something like my HMC150 for that. For a handheld doc, I think the 14-140 is serviceable, but yeah it'd be nicer to have something faster. Even then, for a doc, is shallow DOF that important? Frankly I don't think so -- I think getting the shot is much more important than worrying about whether the shot's in focus or not, and so I'd probably still rather go for the 150 over the AF100 for that. But if I had to do it, I think the 14-140 could get most of the job done, with the 25mm or 20mm for low-light stuff.
