Fast and Furious shatters box office records

It's pretty amazing the amount of people that are getting into these modified japanese cars & motorcycles. It's only going to get bigger.

...right....as a matter of fact I can't wait for the next "Crank" movie...("Crank 2") for more reasons than one. Talk about a mindless excuse of a story.....but it's fun to watch.

but fast and the furious...
im not going to lie, I have seen them all and Im going to watch this one. They havn't been any good past the 1st one, but even then I was young and into cars. We will see how this turns out. Anyone see it yet?

The fact is the movie *might be* totally amazing and what have you. Who knows... the fact of the matter is that all of the people opening weekend didn't know either way.

Here is what saddened me:

A movie, which has had two pretty mediocre outings since the first somewhat entertaining film, attracted THAT many people based on name value and advertising. This film could be good, no word yet from anyone who's opinion I hold in esteem. The fact of the matter is the film, without proving itself attracted that many folks... especially from a dying franchise. To me it's just evidence of the studio system advertising and hype machine, which often is pushing entertainment for entertainment's sake branded films.

Is it fun? probably.... but good story and fun can co-exist. Some forget. As long as the studio wants profit (which is forever) we will see them rather push these babies out and hype it up with adverts rather then take the time, money and resources to dig deep within the creative and artistic soul and take chances on non-formulaic and avant garde like pieces. Why push the boundaries of filmmaking when you can pump out F&F sequels?

Either way, the thousands and thousands who flocked to this movie did so for what reason? They enjoyed the last two? Most likely not. It is then, when you realize the powers that be... and why some films survive and good ones get buried. Business side of filmmaking has always been 'the dark side' to my passion of this art.

I don't see why anyone would have a problem with this movie.. Just because it probably doesn't have some oscar-worthy plot or acting, doesn't mean it won't be a good, old fashioned fun movie to watch. What's wrong with having fun at the movies nowadays??

I know I've always liked going to the movies to have my eyes pounded with fast moving objects, explosions and bright colours every once and a while! lol, I didn't like #2 or 3 whatsoever, although I thought the first one was pretty good when it came out. This one looks like they're kind of going away from the neon colours of the latter two that I didn't really like much. The first one seemed to have a darker tone to it, and so does this, that's why I'm looking forward to seeing it.

Yea, me too now that you mention it. Going more American is a good way to tentpole it.

EDIT: I probably shouldn't say "more" American but mixing it up with the American muscle cars & rice burners is a good thing IMO and not having all rice burners in it.

The only thing I can say is there's no accounting for taste... there are other flicks that seemed pretty low-brow to me and they're defended only because the subject matter is near and dear to the heart.

People like fast cars, sneering CG aliens, hero-monkey team-ups, and blue penises... package that in something an audience can relate to and you have a winner.

Cream rises to the top... but so does poop... and as long as there's box office to eat it up, there will always be more. Lord I sincerely hope the new Star Trek movie is great... not Trekkie great, but great-great.

As for The fast and The furious... I will give it a couple days to see what The Rottentomato consensus has to say about it. So far it doesn't look good. If a flick can't break 60% I probably won't see it... Paul Blart was horribly reviewed and the box office was so good that Seth Rogan has the same damn movie coming out...

Box Office = B.O.

Seems to me there are far more ominous signs of the Apocalypse out there than people going to see a popcorn action flick. I'm not sweatin' it.

I get that fun films can be great, and I like a lot of them that I wouldn't discuss on a deep level for film study purposes. But these aren't even at that level, at least not the later ones. It's just rehashing the same stuff as they did in the previous films, but with less creativity from what I understand (having not seen it, but read a few reviews).

It doesn't matter, though, since other people's taste goes in a lot of directions. This is just one. And opening box office is nice, but doesn't mean much until people start talking about it.

Something occurred to me about that one -- it's a movie where wives/others who hate Star Trek are excited to see it. Think about the context of this thread and tell me how that's not a gigantic double-edge sword!

I'm not too offended when a movie like this makes money. I enjoyed the first film, despite it being a pretty shameless rip-off of Point Break. I can understand why people went to see this. It at least has the potential to be something good, even if it doesn't deliver. It's when movies like Paul Blart:Mall Cop and Madea Goes to Jail shatter box office records that I doubt the taste and intelligence of the moviegoing public.

Dude, your not kidding. I'm working on a project that has an extreme stunt bike guy (one of the guys who rides thier crotch rocket motorcycle standing on thier head), we were hanging out one day shooting the **** and he told me he has sold over 50,000 dvd's @ $25 each of him doing jackass style motorcycle stuff. He produced them all with a cannon GL1 camera for about $1,500. I was floored how many people are into this type of thing.

WTF!? You guys are totally lame! OMG, when I saw that bad-ass car popping that wheelie I knew this movie would be GR8.

Oh and Chip... thanks man... I'll be staring at the ceiling all night after reading that post... because between me, and the guy making 1.5m gross on his own production? He is definitely the smart one.
