Yeah that was the guess that your menu was still opening up on the correct page.
What’s blowing my mind is how the camera saves the settings of menu placement. I tried pulling the battery out of AT card and it still remembers. This means when you start camera, the menu could be open or closed, so we don’t know where it is starting.
It’s crazy this can happen. Ethernet would solve it but again you need the menu to see IP address.
I think you are going to need new AT card to make work.

It blows my mind that the engineers didn't think someone, somewhere, at some point would do this eventually. Especially an AC just trying to feed a clean output to a monitor. I think there's also a Sony control deck that may do the trick. I can't remember the model but perhaps I can find one collecting dust at a broadcaster or rental house.
I tried a similar process on my MacBook but to no avail. Was using Terminal but I may have to try again on a PC to see if it works.

Pounge I give you a pass but not really because you have had the power to fix your camera the whole time. READ THE MANUAL, that is where I found the issue, I did a PDF search of "character" and it was right there.
I must admit when I first started reading your issue, I didn't have the camera in front of me. I assumed that the obviously easy answer had been attempted. I also assumed that someone else with a F35 would speak up...
Sony did think that someone might turn off the characters. They put a quick menu to enable them on the side of the camera. You can fix your camera without any display other than the build in LCD.

Seriously, that's all it took? Definitely feeling like a bit of a dumb ass right now but I'm glad to have the menus working now. It's funny that I actually held down page for 5 seconds before and was like "shutter on? yeah, I'd like the shutter to be on, thank you."
Still need someone to take the side apart and show me this.

Honestly it’s not worth the effort to replace fans, you have to rewire each one and in the end, the power supply fan can’t be replaced easily. I replaced my top fans because they were bad and it is a bit quieter but I feel the improvement of new fan is better cooling to ccd.
Attaching SRW1 is easiest way to make your camera run silent. Just keep one for indoor shooting. I’ve never had huge issue with F35 on low fan settings indoors. When you press record with SRW1, the fans go silent.
If you want to go down the rabbit hole of trying to trick the F35 into rec mode, good luck.

I can tell you all that the Noctua fans FIT!
And I am having a camera tech checking the voltage and resistance later this so I can make sure there will be no internal errors. But yes, more powerful, and less noise

It might seem like a dumb question but does the camera run without a fan connected at all?
Say if you were to replace the internal fans and install some kind of switch that controlled whether or not the new fans got power, would it still work or just pop up errors all over the place? Could be a crude way to allow manual control of the fan.

Are you running the same fans?
Are the other fans the same size? (the one that isn't on the side module)
My cable guy is going to do it for me...so I am not really worried

There are 3 of those 10mm fans and 1 duct type fan over the power supply.
Just make sure you get 12v not 5v version of 10mm fan. Noctua is famous for quality in custom pc world this is why I picked their brand. There are lots of 10mm 12v fans from pc world which will work also. I never could find any with the same plug.
I think you get to the top fan by taking off top dock, but you might need to take off front plate also.
I had fans with bad bearings so I went through effort to upgrade. The stock Sony ones running properly are pretty quiet in min mode. I could only imagine issues in small space.
Another thing is sewing machine oil can be used to lubricate old pc fans if fans are clicking or buzzing.

I got 2 Noctuas, I guess I should look into a third one. Which one was the loudest in your opinion? The small or the duct one? (I imagine we can't replace the duct one)
This is more a longevity thing, and to get it cooler of course. I never had issues with it being loud, but no better solve it before

The top fan is identical to the two vertical on the side. It should be accessible from the top by removing the dock. At the bottom back of the camera there is vent which is airway for a duct type fan over the power supply.
So 3 x 10mm pc type fans total, 1 duct fan. 3 fan controller boards.
Those two fans on the side matter the least, they cool the board which distributes signal to the docks, the top fan is what is going to improve image quality if you are in hot settings.
From my photo if you remove 3 of those screws the entire module comes out and fan is accessible.
