F65 Getting Cheaper

SJX, thanks for that answer. Is it possible that the CION will have a better implementation of the same sesnor? More sensitive and fewer issues than Blackmagic.

Its all spectulation until the cameras go into people's hands. That's why getting all excited for NAB is never that good of a thing - failed expectations. Hype is an annonying thing for me. Just wait for the thing to come out then get excited or disappointed.

I'm no video engineer, but there is a huge possibility that it will have the same problems. It may be minimized but probably will still be there as it's most likely due to the sensor. Color rendition and other things can be different though so the look may feel different. I agree with Ed though. The only way to judge cameras is after they make to the hands of actual shooters in the real world.

Macgregor, nice footage. Do you have any of your own graded frames or finished video?

People must be crazy if they think 8-bit can be graded: (sarcasm)

Download graded image straight from server (no seriously download it and then view it.)

Well, to me those three a7s videos from the fstop guy are "an actual shooter in the real world".

f35 is still by far the most "cinematic" of any Sony camera ever made. It's seriously in another league altogether. I see absolutely no similarities with the F35 and any other Sony, whether it be the F65 /55 / 3 / 5 etc. It's just one of those weird unique things that won't ever be repeated I think, probably due to Panavision's hand in development.

F35 and Alexa have an image that you can't find anywhere else.

As to the new crop of cameras coming about, the BMCC still has a nicer image in my eyes than any of the new Sonys. BMC4k, definitely has some issues and a lack of DR, but the original BMCC still puts out a more pleasing image for film.

One day... one day I will own an F35. The image it produces is just timeless.

I think Genesis would be in there too, given it is shared design from that of Sony right?

But I agree there has been no other CineAlta camera that does what the F35 does inherently. I owned the F3, it is in no way filmic. Mainly I'm talking about highlights. Now I have the F55 and it is great but no magic in-camera, only in post... which takes mad scientist approach of developing cryptic special sauce one can apply to their footage providing it was exposed properly to begin with.

If any F35 owners out there are feeling like jumping ship or feeling buyer's remorse and want to get rid of their F35s let me know. I'm looking for a good deal on one. ;)
You know, I would consider upgrading to an F65 given the new price point...

I have an F35 with docked SR-R1 SR Memory recorder I'd consider selling.

It has:
- HDVF-C30WR Viewfinder
- Assistant Panel
- (2) IF Boxes
- Custom dockplate for SR-R1 recorder
- Extra front plate (useful for mount mods)
- (3) top handles (two extra ones)
- L-Handle

Only real defect is that while the front plate has the LDS electric contacts, the pins are damaged. The spare plate doesn't have this feature.

I also have a few more spare parts and custom machined plates that would get thrown in.

I have SR Memory media and reader, as well as a hard case, but I may not want to sell those if I was moving up to the F65.

If I sold I'd be looking for $13,000 for the above... higher than what I see on e-Bay, but comes with the recorder and extra IF Box.

EDIT: It's worth noting the SR-R1 does almost all modes of recording the F35 offers for output, including 50p 422 and 12 bit RGB 444. With the custom dock plate, it mounts very firmly to the camera.

Thanks for the offer but that's way more than I'm willing to invest. I also prefer to get the original HDCAM SR deck if I'm going to buy it with a recorder. Can the SR-R do ramping and support all the SRW-1 does?

But I'm really looking for a great deal. I don't see sense in investing high on the F35 at this point. I have the feeling that in a couple of months the F35 will drop even more with the arrival of the Cion and Ursa. Also the F65 dropping will force the F35 down too.

As far as upgrading to the F65 I think it's a matter of opinion. I wouldn't go as far as saying that going from the F35 to the F65 would be downgrading. But more like side grading. The only thing it has is more resolution. But as all F35 owners say all the time, 4K is overrated. But it's much heavier and bulkier and the image looks very Sony-like or videoish. Not as bad as the F5 and F55 but it doesn't have the mojo of the F35 and Genesis and it has a CMOS.

No worries. My camera isn't for you then. I certainly am not going to be selling it in the sub $10k market, as it is an amazing camera, and the only reason I'd consider selling it is to generate enough cash to move to the F65.

The SR-R1 doesn't support the ramping or select FPS, sadly, even though it's almost certainly an issue of firmware, not capability. But to my knowledge it supports most other outputs modes the F35 offers.

Also, while continuing generations of equipment do tend to drop the prices of old equipment, some on this forum suggest the total number of F35 cameras ever made is as low as 213. A quick scan of Reduser forums (they love posting serial numbers) makes it clear they are in excess of 5000 Red One MX cameras and over 6000 Epic-X cameras in the world. Suppy and demand works in favor of stabilizing the price of the F35 because of it's unique attributes and low availability.

Best of luck finding the F35 you want. The E-Bay maketplace seems to have one with the recorder for under $10k. Most of the other listings seem to be piecemeal, with handles, viewfinders, and IF Box units all sold ala cart.

EDIT: While I've contemplated buying an SRW-1 for the features that are only available on it, the OB1, and the CODEX, I can't really imagine using a heavy tape recorder in day-to-day operation. Most of my clients today would far rather have digital files than tapes, and tape decks tend to be more prone to failure and require periodic maintenance that solid state recorders don't.

Coming from the Red world, where i shot and owned Red One, Scarlet and Epic... i completely shifted when i got my hands on a F35, like i sold every scrap of Red gear that i had. Now this is just my opinion, but the Red(s), BMCC, FS100, FS700, C100, 300, 500... all those cameras have come out and i have been lucky enough to shoot with almost all of them for commercial projects. Still, when looking at footage at the end of the day, the F35's native characteristics, its actual organic astetic that is literally built into the hardware of the sensor and the boards, is unique and has not been touched since.

My Epic killed the F35 on Reolution (obviously), frame rate, color temp adjustment, ISO, size and weight, ergonomics, versatility and more.... but i would still rather take a F35 on a shoot over 2 Epic's purely from the satisfaction that when i get home. I love the images...

We can talk on the forum for pages and pages about what new cameras might make us fall out of love with the F35. But at the end of the day, unless a new camera starts with the same sensor technology as the F35, then the images will already be different. Images, images, images, its what we see actually on the screen that allows us to tell stories, not the theoretical on paper performance of the hardware :)

I was being sarcastic. :)

When I shot 8-bit 420 on the F3, from some of the footage people thought I used slog and 10-bit recorder. I used neither.

Not to say I don't believe more bits are better but I would never call it night and day difference and I would say it depends on the scene, lighting, etc..

Cinegammas are underestimated and slog takes some skill to grade and maximize the look.

Ok. I guess it just depends on how much grading. If you're 90% there I would say it doesn't make a whole lot of difference.

yes for sure it depends, but many people also believe you can not shoot slog in 8-bit because that is considered extensive grading..

By the way here is an 8-bit 420 image I shot on the F3 from long ago;
