F55: F55 short. Footage shows extreme latitude of 16bit linear raw

How does he get this kind of quality on Vimeo? Does anyone know what kind of settings you use to make 4K footage not look like poop on Vimeo/Youtube. We are shooting with the FS700 RAW and our workflow still isn't up to snuff.

Dennis,
Basically, it changes everytime since we are always trying out new things.

For this video - https://vimeo.com/76199472

Workflow was:
FS700 4K RAW Files - Import folders
Select clips
Import Da Vinci - (UHD not 4K since I am using LITE)
Apply LUT and Grade
Export as 1080p DNxHD
Edit in Premiere
Export to Vimeo using Preset

Adobe is coming out with an upgrade this month that enables us to make dallies and work off Speedgrade in the true native 4K resolution. I think after we do that and work within their Direct Link workflow, the quality of file will be superb. Until then, I am using this weird workflow.

I am always curious how people get amazing quality on Youtube / Vimeo. Is there a secret setting or are they using 4K files then going straight to Vimeo from the 4K file?

Thanks,
Chris

It's all about bitrate for those MPEG4s or h264s. 20mbit to 30mbit is what I try to upload. Check those presets, some of them are significantly less than that.

I've also tied a folder on my Dropbox account to do automatic Vimeo uploads, and I've put regular 8bit ProRes files in there for upload as well, that gets the best results. Long uploads, but it's the best it gets.

I watched your vimeo video, what are you looking to get out of it that you are not currently? It doesn't look bad to me. The only question/comment I have is if you are shooting wide open on that lens @ f2.0 and if you've tried shooting some sharper footage using a smaller aperture. Low apertures aren't really the sweet spot of most lenses.

Regarding workflow, if you are using Davinci to create HD from 4k make sure you are not scaling the image in any weird way to fit the HD frame. Crop is okay, but scaling could cause some issues.

As for using speed grade to create dailies you can also just use Davinci to create your dailies quite nicely, edit them, export the XML, then relink your edit to the original 4k files in Davinci. The great thing about it is you can use the FREE version of Davinci and only be limited to output in HD max.

20mbps is also your best bet regarding bit-rates. Just soooooo slow....

I can't even touch the 4K natively, it converts to Ultra HD. What wrapper are you using on these ProRes updates with higher bit rates? I assume .MOV? Is that why Vimeo allows 5 GB a week, since some people might upload a 1 GB file that looks amazing when converted.

I like how my test looks, just wondering how to make it better. I am always curious how to figure this online stuff to get a better image.

Thanks!
Chris
