F55: F55 2k OLPF unscientific test...

Hey all,

just took the 2k Filter for a rather unscientific and improper test...
just wanted to see what it does.

Used Samyang 85mm wide open at 1.5
and Samyang 16mm wide open at 2.2 (which stressed the filter way more)

all shot in 4k, nested in a 1080p timeline with fill mode.
also a pixel by pixel comparison...

well, my impressions:
it's definitely soft. but a good soft.
i like the look/feel of the shots around our place.

i had issues with artifacts with 120fps and the 4k filter on a commercial .
(as it was for the internet nobody noticed. but for higher end productions rather
bad...)
but recently i shot a MusicDoc in 120fps with a lot of haze and almost no problems...

so - still struggling if it's worth it or not...
really don't know...
even more so with the centre scan HFR mode coming in V3.0

anyway, maybe it's useful to someone...

cheers

stefan

I wonder what it would look like with neither OLPF installed in front of the ND, probably sharp enough to cut glass with? Don't think I'll try it.

hmmm... the 2K filter is appreciably softer. Still looks good and definitely better than suffering the aliasing.

yeah, it looks good...
but i must admit that i reframed my 4k50p stuff on a recent project where we simply were under so much time pressure that we couldn't shoot all the focal lengths/setups that we needed...
that wouldn't been possible with the 2k filter in that way...

I wasn't aware that there was an aliasing problem with the F55. I have only found this once on my F3. Would you say that it is more pronounced than on the latter?

hi,
no, in general there's no aliasing.
just in HFR Mode due to the way the pixels are skimmed in Full Scan Mode (it's a technical necessity)
but as of today (Firmware 3.0) you can do a centre scan mode in HFR, so there should be no aliasing at all..

by "no" i mean what is technically possible...

Thanks Stefan! That's a very helpful test. Do you find 4K shot with the 2K filter to simply be too soft to crop into?

Hey Grug,

yes, for me.
i mean 20% could be fine (my lenses were on their limits wide open, i'm sure the picture would be sharper in general stopped down)
but for my eye 200% is a no go (which works with 4k material in 1080p timeline quite well...)

unfortunately i have a shoot sheduled with a rented RAW Recorder and can't therefor upgrade to 3.0 today...
can't wait to check out centre-scan mode...

cheers

Urgh that's inconvenient, well fingers crossed the centre-scan mode makes HFR more usable.
