F5: F5 successor revealing (really a F65 successor)

I just received the press release (10:20 PM ET) and it would appear that embargo has passed. But it is ambiguous so I won't release anything until I can confirm. You are all wrong, by the way ;)

Savvy of Sony to make this press release as a way to steal some of Canon's thunder from the C200 release.

A completely different market segment, but still. A lot of "wow!"-factor with FF motion picture. It reminds that Sony is a player in the high-end market where Canon isn't a player and has no lineage like that of Sony's.

It reminds that the C200 is comparatively kids' play.

More like an F65/F55 replacement if anything.. I cant see why they would continue making the 65 or 55 when this camera comes out .. it seems aimed at the high end rather than f5 world..

Not sure why people are worried about this.. surely you are shooting log in CineEI.. (Believe the presets to to maintain max DR).. and your footage will have a full grade... if not shoot custom and dial in what you want..they are two operate ways to shoot.. its like complaining that a Ferrari is noisy.. or a Bentley is too quite..

How ei is recorded is really none of our business. We should however have a simple way of seeing a correct (or off!) wb image on set and what we saw should be recorded to meta data to easily replicate in post.

This is how the c200 should work

Sony's 8K "RED Weapon" equivalent ?

Doesnt sound like 8K from the news conference..although they wouldn't give resolution details.. I think 8K is madness myself.. RED are welcome to it.. but down sampling to "real" 4K is the way its going for sure..maybe its around 6K..?.. but making it anamorphic friendly seems aimed at features/highend tv .. corps will just crop !.. seems to me like its an F65 replacement .. in a F55 size body .. I guess it will have the variable ND too.. of course they say its a new generation not a replacement .. might see alot of cheap F65s soon though.. very interesting to see the price.. cameras getting so cheap now.. if its around $30,000 it could actually be a serious challenge to the 2.8K Alexa.. Alexa mini.. or have Arri got something up their sleeve !.. they dont have a single 4K camera.. which is now even becoming redundant, as over sample 4K will be come the norm..

Arri were always going to become irrelevant - the big ships just take time to turn. Wrong? Study Hasselblad in the post 5d2 era.

That panavison thing is the future for theses 'indies'

Nothing with the word Panavision on it is ever cheap to rent .. strictly big time i think.. not the indies friend ..

Indy manufacturers - panavison - Arri - phantom. Non Indy makers (the big ships) - sony panny canon. (Don't know where BM sit)

Not for Indy productions indeed.

Indy manufacturers usually make exotica. Westfield lotus - don't do cars for shopping.

Phantom flex 4K is one camera that is a mile from any of the current corporate vendors (CSP)

But you cant buy anything Panavsion.. never could.. only rental and not cheap.. unless old and knackered ..

Their lenses are just re housed from other makers AFAIK

Whatever - Arri did something - make a usable digital camera for episodic television or with 3.6 raw motion pictures - they killed film.

(Hasselblad killed film with the 22mp digiback for stills - canon 5d2 affordably killed film for stills)

But now the big beasts bring the same thing (c200) for less than £10k

So Arri must get back into its hole of exotica doing what the big Beasts don't do.

The flex seems to be the only "safe" exotic camera as its specs are off the chart compared to SoCanPan

Consider the Alexa mini vs the canon c200 - drone/gimbal cams on pro productions - name a reason you would pick the mini?

It has to be at least 4k just within the S35 crop circle. You can do the math. The full sensor has to be more. Which also raises the question of what lens/adapter is going to give the FF circle.

Don't quite understand the statement.
If you have the budget, everyone here (USA- NY in particular) would pick the Alexa mini over the C200 without question. Especially the producers and ac's.
If you don't have the budget, the C200 is extremely interesting (on paper- for now) especially with the DPAF + face detection + tracking. Canon leads the video world with functional autofocus- which is huge if you've tried it.

I will be first to say it's really hard to get over manual focus all the time, but the times I've used DPAF (say 200mm actor walking/running towards camera- C300 Mk2) the camera nails the focus every time. This is probably one of the easier AF shot, but not that easy for a less experienced focus puller- or myself operating and pulling focus at the same time.

So low budget, small crews the C200 is starting to have an advantage over the Alexa Mini- for focus alone.

BTW, not to derail the subject- a FF Sony with FZ mount- and full F- series ecosystem? yes that would be most interesting indeed.
