F5: F5 half the price. Is Sony releasing new models soon??

I can only imagine it will be $$$
Eh, $6,000-$7,000, I figure. Depends of how crippled some of its features will be.

i want to see all the cameras that are going at half price. So far I hear of one, the OP's boss who is selling his. After that, where are they? ....
Sony is running a huge promotion on new F5's, giving away a ton of accessories with it and even a brand new A7SII camera. I don't know if this is a US sale only or if there are similar deals in the EU or Asia but this definitely puts a downward pressure on the used F5 prices.

Ohh, I hope so...I have been waiting for some type of 1DC upgrade for 3 years...
F5 has been around for three years as well ... just sayin', right?

BTW, an s35 20 MPX sensor from F65 can't cost more than a FF 42 MPX sensor on A7RII. The electronics for the ability to record 4:2:2 Raw can't be much more than what's already in there. Just add the R5 recorder and you're ready to go.

No, I don't think new camera is coming from Sony. Their line up is complete and they're ahead of everyone, why would they? What they will do is announce new upgrade path (internal raw?higher framecrates?)

I think there is a lot of speculation going on here and frankly not much justification for it.

Bexel has 2 F5s with LCD finders for $9999 unsold for at least 3 weeks, and they go to auction in 2 more weeks.

Somebody just posted an F5 from Russia (yeah, I know) on Reduser for $9k.

There's been one or two more. FS5 and FS7 have eaten the bottom out of F5s. It's a milder version of what happened with the F3 as soon as the 5 and & 55 was announced, but for different reasons. Sony has a gift for pulling the rug out from under resale value.

If you're a solidly working shooter, it doesn't matter as much because you bill what you bill for the camera and you go on creating good work with it and clients are happy. But if you need to switch gear for some reason, you better have worked that camera solidly or you're taking a loss.

Sony will never get a F65 replacement into the Alexa space because pretty much everybody who bought a F65 new took a huge loss on it.

Even if F5 was at the same price as FS7 and I had to chose only one camera I would still go for FS7 (batteries, media, size, e-mount). BUT I'd love to get F5 as a second camera, that together with R5 recorder and FS7 would make an absolutely terrific combo that would cover literally everything (well... maybe add A7SII to that and then you're really ready for anything).

Funny I would buy the F5 for exactly the same reasons.. V mount batts,Pro lens mount,SxS,size.. TC in.. (except for the audio plugs !!) :)

Thats the beauty of choice .. horses for courses ..

Haha, that's exactly what I thought when I read your first sentence!! :D Great times that for every one of us there's a camera that fit it's particular style of work.
(have to agree about TC... this is really something that SHOULD be on the body not on the extension unit).

Yes.. everyone wants to validity their own purchase .. and thats good.. you should love your camera :).. before there was very little choice in camera,s you could show up with for paid shoots..

The premise of the op is "F5 half the price. New models soon?" Then read his post, because it's half price used. Well ahem, okay but to me the topic is bait and switch. Then your comment the F65 that everyone who bought one took a huge loss on it. I would love to buy one of these misery priced losers. Where are they?

If you mean, Alexa65 space, which is ~ $300,000 as based on its rental fees, then I would agree. But I would place a small wager that a medium format cinema camera from Sony will be out soon enough and priced more in line with F65 than with Alexa65.

Timing the market is next to impossible, naturally. Many manufacturers make debuts and announcements at the NAB - hey, is that a new Black Magic Design? - but Sony picks and chooses. That said, Canon C500 MKII is expected around the NAB'16 and Sony might as well have a competing product out there as well.

I say there will be a new camera soon.

Agreed! Given the recent trend of advancements and shelf life for tech nowadays, you would have to be silly not to assume a newer model will be here soon(same with the 55). I do think it will be more of an incremental update with some attractive goodies rather than completely new cameras(a'la c100/c300 mk ii's).

IMO, it won't be incremental. I wouldn't be surprised to see F65 quality and the F55 workflow for the F5 price. FS7 already does 8.8 MPX Raw for about $13,000 (with the all the required accessories). F5 replacement would have to double the FS7's bandwidth, which shouldn't be difficult either, as A7RII s35 oversamples 4K from 15 MPX, which is only slightly less than F65's 17.6 MPX sensor. And, of course, A7RII does it for $3,000, not $16,000.

I say there will be a new camera soon. Whether it will be an official "replacement" (F5 MKII) or just something that fits Sony's entirely new cinema lineup is up for a debate. F5 was announced in October, 2012 and the technological progress has not kept still over that time. Since F5's release, Sony cinema cameras fit into a fairly normal "double the price" progression - FS7 for $8,000, F5 for $16,000, F55 for $30,000 and F65 for $60,000. These days, a manufacturer can release F65 spec'ced piece for the historical price of F5. And, if not these days, then by the NAB'16.

If they release a F65 spec'ced camera for double the price of a URSA Mini 4.6K kit, that would be weird. But I guess they have more prestige?

Just an opinion, but I think there is a whole lot of wishful thinking in there :) The fs7 is a GREAT value for single operators but it doesn't hold a candle to the operational ability of its older siblings, nor does the quality of its RAW signal(Sony made damn sure of that).
