F5: F5 gets the boot from NetFlix… or do they?

... Broadcasters are a the mercy of the fixed bandwidth they have available to send their signal and face a whole different set of problems than Netflix, Hulu etc. when it comes to 1080/4k.
Yes and no. They can't broadcast in 4K but they can stream in 4K, since every episode is these days also available online a few hours after the original airing. But the OTA's, with few exceptions, choose not to do that, mostly likely due to the higher cost of 4K production and their familiarity with Alexa's workflow.

The magenta vignetting is a hardware problem, as is the aliasing. You can't fix that just because it's RAW. That's not to mention the color science which has a strong cyan magenta bias...
Obviously, the Netflix technical staff disagrees that the problem is as severe as you deem it to be.

These days I work with traditional TV Networks and production companies and with new media.
The new media people have higher standards these days they are always up to date on all tech stuff while the TV people are at least 10 Years behind on all things. I also find that the TV folks are less creative and more inside the box.
TV spent decades standardising and sticking to formula and surprising any new ideas within their structures- what they are mostly creative about is coming up with new titles for themselves.

$70,000 4 days sports promo for a news channel.. no gear..these days.. no way.. ??.. I think they pulling your leg there.. never trust what a productions manager tells you they are paying other people :)

Unless for some reason they bought in one of the 10 ten guys in the world.. Oscar winner etc..

No Oscar's that I know of, but lot's of Emmy's.

Not a news channel. One of the 'big three' networks sports divisions. Not pulling my leg. I go way back with this guy and he had no reason to pull my leg. He was actually venting about having to bring this guy in. I was shooting for the production company that he works for and they had to bring this guy in, it was a requirement of the network. They wanted him. This was a pretty large shoot. I asked one of my friends that does some film/movies/commercials, etc. how large this shoot really was since I don't live in that world and I was told that crew and equipment wise it was as large as a small movie and the budget was probably at least $500K. Two Alexa's, two Arri 435's(they shot a lot of high-speed film) on the "big set".

Ok stand corrected Sir.. but wow that does seem alot compared to anything Ive ever read about rates .. over $17,000 a day for a TV sports division.. they keep telling us they have no money anymore :)

they have no money for content when it comes to self promotion the gloves come off.

When it comes to their own pay they have plenty.. Im just surprised they let a worker get paid that.. it could have been a valuable 2 day fact finding mission to Miami at the 4 seasons.. what a waste of resources .. . to say nothing of the lap dancers who missed out getting a cut.. totally irresponsible ..

It's kinda exhausting conversing about the same topic on two different threads. Can't we end this one and just continue it on the other?

BTW, the critiques of the BMD URSA Mini 4.6K are a bit misdirected. I believe those issues were leveled at the original URSA Mini 4K, not the 4.6K or 4.6K Pro models.

The 4.6K sensor actually might have more issues than the original 4K sensor.

Not sure how resolved they are as I haven't kept up with it, but were once brutal if you got a bad camera.

First conversation had sort of died out hadn't it..(netflix are stupid to have 4K.. no their not ).. they nearly always evolve to something else.. then I would just stop reading it if I didn't find it interesting anymore ?

I was surprised, too. Yeah, they'll unload truck loads of money on certain things and never bat an eyelash, and then beat-up the little guys over little things like per diem and OT. I have a different network client that stopped paying per diem unless you stay in a hotel out of town overnight. Doesn't matter if you ate all three meals 'on-the-road' and spent 20 hours away from home, unless you stayed in a hotel and submit the bill. They won't even pay partial, even though they have a break-down per meal of the per diem rate.

Thats a joke.. where is the logic there.. well then I would take every break and the full time allotted for them..

And it's not just freelancers. Staff employees are treated the same. That's one of those "penny wise and und foolish" ideas that someone that doesn't travel came up with. Most people wanna get home as soon as they can, but some will stay, just to prove a point, and end up costing them a LOT more than the would have paid out in per diem.

Classic management move.. and they always end up costing more .. if we shot like they " work" can you imagine the results..

Broadcasters are always late to the party. It took them about 20 years to finally adopt HD.

Maybe I'm just more picky.

Of course, they're not in charge of the broadcasting standards either.

My take is that URSA 4.6 Raw can be graded into a lot of things, including the orange&teal LUT that makes an occasional magenta tint a moot point.

My buddies cousin is the Head Legal Counsel for Netflix and he's producing a Doc that we shot on A7s, FS7, A7RII's so I know it's not mandatory, at least I don't think

BUT is this a Netflix commissioned piece or a 'Netflix Original' series? The 4K cam list is for Netflix Original Series productions.
