F5: F5 Frame rates

Hi, I was wondering if someone can clear this up for me. I am really considering dropping some cash on an F5, but can someone tell me what the maximum frame rates are with and without the recorder please? I saw somewhere on here that the firmware will eventually enable 240fps. Is this true?

No speculation please! Just facts :)

If you mean the Sony RAW recorder, for the F5 the max frame rate in 4K is 60p and 120 in 2K. Same as in-camera to XAVC. From the Sony release schedule, 2K RAW will not be enabled in the recorder until the Fall. 240fps is for the F55 only. Sony has stated some features and capabilities will be added to the cameras that have not even been mentioned before but who knows what those could be. I wouldnt want to guess as it could be something really basic.

Here is a link to FD Times 96 page booklet that has lots of up to date info:

Ok, so that thread that I posted could be a typo huh? The frame rates make a huge difference to my camera purchase.

It was early information stolen from a small audience webcast @Rule Boston. About a week-2 weeks later, after they realized people were seeing that info, they posted official revised info which is what's on the Sony site.

Anyways, that clears that up. Max fps on the F5 is 120, so I need to rethink everything.

Another question that would help is, when the FS700 is shooting in raw 4k, is it still 8bit? Sorry if that's a totally retarded question, but I saw a post saying that raw can't be less than 12bit. Confused.

And has anyone discovered a different solution for recording raw on the FS700, other than the recorder and adapter? That thing made it HUGE!

No, raw on the FS700 is either going to be 12 bit or 16bit. Since the raw off the 55 looks so awesome, I'm thinking the FS700 raw actually might be worth putting up with that PIA adapter for the R5.

Since there's no firmware yet for FS700 that enables the raw spigot, there's no alternatives yet. The bandwidth of the 4K raw is not crazy enough to prevent recording by a AJA Quad or Convergent Gemini, but I think it's going to be dependent on either companies willingness to write the firmware on their end to receive the raw stream and properly package it on disk. And also Sony's willingness to give 3rd parties the info they need to make sense of the raw stream.

Every camera with a raw stream output has a home-brewed format for pushing it out the spigot, there's no standard for that stuff.

Right now the FS700 is the only camera that with firmware update will give you 4k 12-bit over single 3G-SDI. This leaves other options open over the HXR + AXS R5 recorder. (Like AJA hopefully)

I also believe that FS700/RAW will open up that FS700 to a whole new dimension of images and image quality. 12-bit is plenty for RAW linear, and its too bad on the F5/F55 it wasn't 12-bit/16-bit switchable! It would save 16 times the space, and still deliver high quality raw images and raw image power.

So glad to have the internet and smart people. Cheers for the info guys.

This really puts the FS700 back in the picture. If I could afford the F55, I'd get it, but I can't. So it looks like the FS700 could be the way to go. Still contemplating...

Sony has not totally revealed its FS-700 4K upgrade path, but what we do know so far is that it will be via an interface box between camera SDI and the AXS-5 recorder. You are correct that this will be the least expensive 4K Raw path despite the fact that we don't have all of the details. I am convinced that the FS-700 4K raw will produce great images. So if you want Raw without the investment in F55, this is a very viable path.

I don't see anyone needing to spend ~ $7000 for the HXR + AXS modules to record 4k after already spending $2000 on the firmware upgrade. (hopefully Sony dishes out the firmware upgrade FREE in the end). but I still hope AJA provides support for the 4k over SDI, that would be a clear winner and hopefully less expensive.

I think the question is "when' and maybe "if". I would be very unhappy if I had bought an FS700 with the expectation of shooting 4k. It's been quite awhile since the FS700 was released. Wasn't it in August 2012? And still not even an announcement much less say some firmware.

I realize they want to support the F5 and F55 firmware developments, but the FS700 and F3 need some love too.

I'm not hearing a thing about 1.5 as I suspect that development of F5/55 firmware is primary.

As far as the FS-700 goes, Sony has indicated there will be support but has yet to announce anything beyond the camera to recorder interface box. NAB is right around the corner so we will see what will be announced.

I could swear I read somewhere that the FS700 4k firmware was slated for June or July of this year.

I had read June or July also. When I asked Sony for more specifics for an article, the response was that they have not yet revealed the FS-700 pathway to 4K. That's why I am hoping we will hear something definitive at NAB
