F5: F5 and Atomos Shogun Flame...the good, the bad, and the ugly

Caveat Emptor, Mitch. Having said that, it doesn't take many transactions to begin to "know" what can be expected from any particular OEM. They have a personality, just like people, do.
Of course we can't expect a vendor to know everything, but, I do make note of which vendors make fewer mistakes than the others. And which mistakes end up costing me $$$ or my ability to make my deliverables. This is painfully true of software vendors, especially the ones that don't do much regession testing, that let the customers do beta testing for them, and employ programmers , that aren't users, to write code.

I've said that before.

I've got the Shogun Flame running on my FS7 with FW 4.0 and it works pretty damn well. As a monitor - it is amazing. Battery life isn't the best, but you can just D-tap if you don't want to keep swapping the cheaper batteries. Resolution is excellent with the native 1920x1200 HDR along with the focus tools. I only wish it would let you pre-load more that 8 LUTs at a time. With the SmallHD you can just scroll through the browser and get a real time preview. And yes, Flame is only limited to UHD 30p, but the auto record trigger is terrific, something you don't get with HD-SDI. For my purposes its been great. I don't really have a need for raw and I have a couple of clients that are ok with me burning in the LUTs to the ProRes shogun recorded footage and giving an ungraded CineEI copy from the cards as well. 99% of the time they are just using the burned in footage while having the luxury of going to the native SLOG3 files if they need it.

You would not be happy with hdmi UHD 50p/60p anyway, since the FS7 delivers here 8bit 420 from the HDMI interface only. So the only ways to receive UHD 50p/60p with the FS7 are the internal XAVC I recording, or using the XDAC unit and recording to UHD 50p/60p ProRes with the upcoming Inferno, or the Q7+ in ProRes or raw. What seems to be a restriction is that the Inferno seems to be limited to UHD 30p in raw.

If a recorder only has a single SSD then the maximum frame rate of uncompressed CinemaDNG in DCI 4K or UHD 12-bit RAW that it could ever capture is 30p. Above that there is too much data to fit across a single SATA port. The Odyssey7Q+ and Odyssey7Q are the only RAW recorders with dual SSD slotss, and those dual SSD slots are each ontheir own addressable SATA bus. This makes them the only recorders of their type capable of DCI 4K / UHD recording up to 60p in 12-bit RAW CinemaDNG.

Means that it would have been much better for the customer if both CD and Atomos would have used a higher compressed raw format but not CDNG. To work with CDNG brings also higher requirement in our raid capacities then 1:3 compressed raw formats that are available on the market too.

CinemaDNG is an open standard that is free for clients to use and is supported by numerous post systems. There is a consortium of manufacturers of which Convergent Design is a part that maintains the CinemaDNG support standard so that everyone continues to share in the support.
