F5: F5/55 Footage Thread (After Release)

heimspiel felix, what firmware you running? v1.03 addresses some highlight issues, mainly "black edges" which I would categorize as different than what we're seeing on your footage.

Regardless, it be interesting to know your firmware version and if you've tried v1.03.

Cheers

I saw his footage days ago, saw the weird highlight halos. He had 1.01 or 1.0.

Great, I hope 1.03 clears that up. I wonder why Sony never cleared it up on the F3 if that's the case. Take any F3 aim at sunset in standard rec709 and standard matrix and you will see the same effect in the your VF or LCD. Had nothing to do with post in my case..

It does. My cam came with 1.01 and I shot a whole day with messed looking highlights. Yesterday morning I got 1.03 on it, fixed it.

This bug is not what you think it is. I'm not going to post screenshots of it because it's now fixed and nobody needs to see it. The F3 never had it. In certain situations it made very ugly images.

It's something that barely made it's way into images on the internet, for most part. You have to have the camera and shoot with it to know what it really was.

Sorry if I helped to mix things up, although v1.03 may have fixed the highlight issues you first saw with your camera I would like to know if v1.03 also fixes the yellow chroma ring issue seen throughout Felix's footage (which I posted screen shots of).

To test it just aim at a few sodium vapour light and adjust iris.

Went out the door at sunset yesterday evening just to see what it would look like. I hate to post this sort of stuff, it's about only a half-step away from shooting your own backyard and your cats, but I know some people are curious, so here's something for what it is worth.

Maybe the only redeeming feature is that I uploaded ProRes HQ to Vimeo, and you can download the ProRes from the page as well.

Looks great and I love the range of brightness I am seeing. The range from 0:13-0:18 says it all!

That's it, I'm ordering F55 tomorrow!

One thing I'm noticing is that while nobody would call the F3 a "low res" camera, the 5/55 are resolving noticeably more IF you are viewing the material in a way that shows it. More about a real 1080p viewing device and viewing distances.

But again, it's not like the F3 is a slouch. Or that it even really matters in the end. But I'm now seeing it didn't "fill up the bucket", so to speak, which is line with the resolution numbers that have been posted for the F3.

If all you did in post was apply a LUT, thats one good LUT! Highlight handling looks great.

I didnt even know you could upload a ProRes HQ file to Vimeo. Was your intention with that for it not to be compressed twice?, once by you and once by them?

Very nice, Nate.

I'm actually just back from Times Square shooting raw with the BMCC. I don't think this should come as a big surprise to anyone, but the F55 images are nicer than the Blackmagic camera.

Shot my Tamron 17-50 tonight. But the footage looks good. The Sigma 8-16 is a very good lens for that camera.

After a weekend shooting with the F55 its been great. Its come a long way since I shot with the pre-production model (or engineering sample) in Dec. From Std 5-rec 709, to the HG, and S-log2... what can I say. I've been shooting lots of 60fps XAVC, transcoding in Resolve until CS7 is out. Colours are beautiful. Great dynamic range, and when all the firmware is in place, its a camera that covers what I've been looking for.

Soltz: have you see any/many image problems with your BMCC. Not that I'm bustin' on it (it's $3k) but I see a lot of color aliasing and moire issues. So much so that I ditched mine (never even opened it) to get a mega-recorder for my F35.

Nigel,
How is the high ISO vis-a-vis C300? 12800, 16000, 20000.

Definitely some moire. Shooting Times Square at night with all of the brightly colored lights definitely indicated some color aliasing issues as well. I take it for what it is-- the promised Scarlet. 3K (almost) for $3K. Consider it the next camera up for DSLR users where you get many of the same issues as with DSLR but with superior codecs and with raw. Skin tones are very nice. For $3K, I really like it. I wouldn't buy it as it just doesn't fit for me, but that's a different story. Goes back to BMC today.

Hi Nate.
Thank you for posting ProRes HQ footage. Log footage is hard to judge after it is been compressed for Vimeo or YT.
I downloaded the other footage you had in Vimeo and notice after watching it on a 42" that it has some estrange looking artifacts or something at minute 1:00.
Is it on the original or was it during any other process?

Your screen grab is so low res and mangled by compression I'm not sure what I'm looking for? I see my neighbors landscaping pointed to, but?

The screen grab is just to show you where I saw it in the footage. It has to play to see it.
It happens while you are panning.
