F35 vs Alexa from Modern Family

I like the f35 more. It's more filmic and more ''thick'' for the lack of a better word

in the lost non-internet-connected part of the world, the middle east, I've actually just found out that the rental fee of the F35 is slightly higher than an Alexa kit, and many large productions use them everyday, when I asked they all give the same answer, ''it costs more than alexa and it's a better image''. The ''Ebay'' quick depression still hasn't reached out here, and they don't read dvxuser ;)

That's it, I'm moving to the middle east.

Personally, I can't see the value of that matrix of images, they are apples and oranges to varying degrees. I'd have to see the same setups shot on both cameras simultaneously or consecutively to be able eliminate variables and draw a true comparison.

I agree. We need to know lenses, lighting setup, colorist, DP, gaffer, etc.
But still, emotionally, it just feels good to know that the F35 still has some legs in the race.

But yes, agreed Charles, overall it is just me spreading F35 propaganda to make myself feel better for owning 2 giant weird tank-like cameras when the whole world shoots on Alexa. Well most of the world.

Ha, gotcha Ed.

I think it's cool that you and the other guys have "discovered" the F35 and are out there shooting with them, they were and are fine machines. It's interesting to think back to that time when the F35 was the one to beat, and the Arri D20/D21 generally thought of as the less desirable competitor.

I'd actually be interested in seeing a head-to-head test of the Alexa and F35 (and F55 for good measure) under more controlled circumstances, is there one?

Yes agree F35 look more like film. Even if not apples to apples is easy to see IMO.

Check out guy's shirt at the end, red is red on F35, orange on Amira.
Overall tone is slightly warmer and more saturated on F35 shot.
But yes, CMOS does have more trouble with reds. CCDs are known to give better saturation in color.
It can be corrected in a color session.
That said we all agree that the F35, while slightly older and using different underlying technology, still produces a great image. Recording directly to solid state media brings the workflow up to date. The current price for a rig really hits home how good the low end (out of pocket costs) is right now- for indie and passion projects
Options options options.

My question to owner ops is- are you able to sell the F35 (and hopefully 4444 Prores capture) on paying gigs?

None of the lighting matches between the two cameras, so I'm not sure how useful this is. ( i.e. 90 percent of the differences could have been the lighting )

There is no problem with saturation, hue is the problem.

If You look at the workflow posted on YT, primary color correction has been applied in color session.

You'll need secondary CC to get red where they should have been in the first place. And that is unnecessary step in the workflow (You know - time is money).

4:4:4 is great for VFX and secondaries, today's 4:2:0 4k cameras are just getting on F35 level for HD production.

My new gopro 5 beats the f35 imagery hands down since it can 4k. F35 can only do 1080p. More pixels is better. Duh.

Haha Ed! Big fan of your sense of humor. But agree. I bought new phone and discover it can 4K too. I will dump F35 now. Who needs high end cinema camera if you have 4K phone. More pixels is better, coff F35 6K sensor more pixels than alexa, FS7, F55 sensor, coff.:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)
