F35 - I just joined the club

Got a cheaper sale on paypal - so now I can be part of the club.
Based off of Miguel's footage and Hunter swearing on the bible that it's a better image than the Alexa.

I am curious who to send the plate to - have you guys been doing it to shave it down so I can mount a nikon mount on it.

also going to check out how to rig a v mount plate onto the camera to use to power it and make it as light-weight as I can.

after waiting 2 minutes each time I want to boot up the Red One MX - I am getting a little tired and that damn fan noise.

10 second boot up time. CCD chip. Global shutter. S log.

Excited to see what this puppy can do.

i will - does anyone know a person who will modify the pl mount to a nikon mount? Who are you guys using again?

For the record I said " F35 properly exposed slog->Import resolve -> set to data levels -> add Alexa LUT = the most film like image I have ever seen besides film itself, hands on the bible." ; )

I've been very impressed with this camera. I am considering it as an option now. Right now I have the BMCC pre-ordered. I have a few questions though if I were to get the Sony F35.

1: Would I be stuck with the PL mount or is there a lens adapter so I can use affordable lenses?

2: The SW1 recorder it uses takes HDCAM tapes lilke this, correct? http://www.adorama.com/VDMXB124HD.html?gclid=COT309r_qbUCFdSLPAodpTcAdw

3: If I bought one of these on Ebay would buying a Mack Used Camera Warranty cover it you think?

4: How does the low light compare to say a Canon T2i? Is it on par, dramatically better? What? I'm curious at what level it's on in this regard.

Thanks! :)

1. We are working on making a modification to the front plate to allow Nikon lenses - it would cost around $2k t do it.
2. You can use a ssd drive recorder. I just tested it with the samurai recording pro res hq. It worked. The HD CAM SR recorder is heavy.
3. I don't know about Warrenties
4. Its rate at ASA 400. I don't know what the Canon T2i is rated at.

This is not a camera really that is like the BMC - it's 12 lbs -requires heavier gear and probably more lighting than the BMC.

The T2i is "better" in low light.

I've seen both side by side, Blackmagic and F35, in various situations, and on a recent job where Blackmagic was C-Cam to two F35s shooting to Hyperdecks. Blackmagic to ProRes Film(LOG) as well. I was DIT, so spent a lot of time with the footage from both cameras.

There are differences in lowlight, but I can't say that Blackmagic doesn't want as much light as the F35, and in some cases the F35's noise pattern was slightly more pleasant in motion, or slightly more "film like" if that makes sense.

I'm sorry, but if you're comparing a F35 to a T2i, at least considering one an alternative to the other, I think there's something really really wrong.

And the F35 has an ISO adjustment that goes from from 450 to 1000ISO (not 400).

I think people are getting confused about what this camera is. If you can barely afford a blackmagic or DSLR, I'm sorry but this camera is not for you.
I'm going to write a post about this.

So, we agree at last! This is all I have been trying to say and I was basically labeled a troll for breaking people's dreams. People were asking very basic questions on your thread, which showed they were not prepared at all to own such a camera, let alone need it or have the productions to back it up. But people just barked back at me saying that I was just being negative, thinking what I was doing was bashing the camera etc.

Looking forward to your write up on this.

p.s. I'm sure a lot of it will already be contained in my replies in your thread. Be careful not to be labeled a negative moron though.

No one is comparing the F35 to a T2i. You're confusing trying to get a frame of reference for low light sensitivity to comparing overall image quality. The T2i is simply my only CURRENT camera. Why you think it's "wrong" to upgrade is beyond me, and I never said the T2i was an alternative to the F35. You're taking my question way out of context.

And the F35 has an ISO adjustment that goes from from 450 to 1000ISO (not 400).
This is helpful & useful information.

Sure are making a lot of assumptions there. I can afford a Red Epic if I choose to. The fact that I have the BMCC pre-ordered shows that I have not chosen to do so. However, I have kept my options open. Is that wrong?

It just seemed like maybe you thought getting the f35 was going to be an easy transition from the T2i. And it's not

Yes Mac - it's 450 ISO rated in CINE MODE - on standard mode it's at 400 ISO.

As Adam points out its not as heavy as a film camera like the arri 435 but still its a whole different league in terms of what you need to use it from the BMC.

And Adam I apologize for calling you a troll. You have really good opinions but stlll to me if someone posts that they just bought camera "x" and you go on their post and say how you don't like a bunch of things about it, well that's just not nice.

How would you feel if you just bought a new Audi and you come home and your friends are like, "hey man, that car is good, but the BMW is so much better in transmission and handling and just looks better" - that sucks :)

Not really directed straight at you, but just because one can afford one doesn't mean he can properly use one (Epic). Two different things. If you have never shot with a F900, F23, F35, Genesis etc and your experience is limited to DSLRs or prosumer cameras, the F35 is a big step in a totally different direction. It's a bit like thinking because you can ride a scooter, that if you jump on a Harley you will just ride away. Chances are you would fall flat on your face.

Again, not directed at you in particular as I have no idea of your experience. But holding the T2i as a frame of reference does imply that this is where your experience is. Otherwise you would ask how the low light compares to say an Alexa or Genesis instead of a T2i.

See, this is something that I didn't really do. What I was saying is how people thinking to get the same results as Hollywood with just a F35+some still lenses were a bit delusional. Not that the camera sucked or anything. And how shooting with a F35 is quite different from shooting with say a F3 and people were just pretending it isn't. But now, people seem to be saying exactly what I said. Oh well, I don't want t go through all that again.

Well, I would hope that if I bought an Audi, I would have done my home work first, and would know that it's just a glorified VW and that it is a front-wheel drive car and know all it's faults. And if somebody came and said the BMWs were more fun and safe to drive because they were rear-wheel drive and had a V12 engine, I couldn't really feel bad, because it's true. As an adult, I would just take it and deal with it. Either I did my homework and already knew, to which point it wouldn't bother me, or I didn't do my homework before buying the car and would be in denial, to which would be my own fault :)

For most people this analogy may be correct, but I would figure it out relatively quickly no doubt. I am a very quick learner.

I understand how it could appear, but I was merely trying to gauge the low light sensitivity, so I'd know what to expect (ie; step up or step down). I do not have much experience shooting with high end cameras to be honest, but that's not to be mistaken for someone with the inability to use one. I am a quick learner and love to soak up knowledge in this field. I have worked with BMCC RAW footage with ease. If I had the camera there is not one shred of doubt I'd figure it out and make great footage with it. It's not rocket science by any means.

The reasons why I asked how the low light compares to the T2i instead of a higher end camera like the Alexa or hell, even the lower end FS100U is because it's a bit of an older cinema camera and I wasn't sure how the low light of an older model cinema camera would compare to the expected low light of today's cameras, even consumer wise. Just needed a frame of reference, that's all really. I already assumed it was no match for the Alexa in low light.

Thanks for the replies.

I wouldn't expect it to be an easy transition. I'd welcome the added depth and complexity. I am the type of person who loved to use 200lbs CRT projectors as opposed to digital projectors before their black levels became good enough...which was vastly more difficult and daunting to setup for most people who wanted plug and play. It required me to learn how to work on the inside of the machine around high voltages even, focusing all of the lenses, converging the guns and much more. It took hours to setup what would take 10 minutes with a digital projector, but in the end I had a beautifully calibrated D65 image with pretty much infinite on/off contrast using a low end gamma bump. So, considering I'm that type of person I have no doubts in myself to learn how to use an F35. Not being arrogant or anything or saying it would be easy, but I would figure it out. I do appreciate the concern though. I'm sure some people jump into things not knowing what they're getting into.

Heavy doesn't bother me. Hell, it'll reduce microshakes even without a stabilizer and make me stronger! :P

Probably won't end up getting the camera simply due to having to modify the mount as I don't own any PL lenses, but I had to check it out to see if it was an option.

It should never be easy

If you go through with the challenge of the mount and well hacking this camera - you have a camera that can produce an image that can look better than the Alexa at 1/6th of the price.

I took the challenge.

You should too.

I like how you are reacting to these challenges.
