F35 Beginners: Can I do handheld with it? (inc. how to mount it to a tripod)

Thanks for the suggestion hunter, I will have to try that out. I am designing a new interface box with my machine shop guy so I will have two parts I need to paint black to match. It is just a metal plate about an inch thick, the ca joint screws into the back. The plate is hollowed out in the center with a space to mount the little circuit board needed for the dual SDI output and the two SDI plugs come off the side, then on the back I will drill mounting holes for the battery plate. Basically I am going to replace the hyper deck with this smaller interface box in my setup.

Probably overkill for what it saves I just think the interface box is awkward and filled with empty space. My goal is to get 12 bit out without making my rig any larger. I don't need the audio inputs or 12v power input so I am ditching them and just keeping the parts needed for the SDI which is very little. I'll post pictures once I get the thing together.

My Ronford kit is now available for sale. Please see the relevant thread in the sale section, which I'll be putting up later today. The powers that be don't like for sale threads outside of there.

No, just had an offer to get the official ARRI baseplate, which will suit my new film camera better. The ronford is still an excellent baseplate.

I got told off by the powers that be about my sale threads, but I don't know any other way of letting you guys know I have something for sale.

James- I think it's OK to put a link to the sale section in your sig, so it's there to see in all your posts, can even make it a color like yellow.

Keith- Where did you pick up that battery plate, innocinema? Is it AB?

It's the V-lock Sony BKP-L551 plate. It's drilled out to perfectly fit onto the back of the IF box, but in the pics in this thread I had it on an Otto cheese plate that attached via the IF back mount. I was fortunate and managed to score my plate on Amazon as an open box/used item for under $200.

Does anyone know if the red dovetail (made to work with the Red bottom plate) will work with the Arri standard sliding plate. Although a shoulder pad off the rods is nice, one that slid into the sliding plate would be closer to the camera. I have been considering several options like yours keith, but I might just go with nothing but rods for a while and a foam pad on my shoulder, The pad built into the f65 is nice because it actually gets the camera weight down around your shoulder and chest. Red's are much lighter so the rigs don't feel as awkward until you put a camera like a F35 and the camera weight starts to feel like its sitting too far up.

I have seen many ENG operators who could balance rigs on their shoulder, and in turn hold the rather heavy rig for hours.

Somewheres way back Hunter put a Cabrio 19-90 on his F35. To me this was the perfect F35 handheld, ditch all rods and the F35 bottom plate and just use the lens handle and a small pad under the body.

Can you remind me how did you attach the hyperdeck to the back of the camera?

Mac,

I actually just sat down tonight to remake my hyper deck. The hdmi output on my last one went from a big tug. I will take some good photos of the process and post them for you tomorrow. Very excited about what I've learned from the IF box insides. My new hyper deck will have the power for F35 and hyper deck internally by removing the cable from the IF dock bottom connector. It is a plug that looks similar to a vga connector that has all the red and black wires condense down into two that connects to the 4 pin in the IF box. I bought some $25 Anton Bauer plates on ebay that I am going to connect straight to the other side of the hyper deck and then drill holes in the hyper deck to pass the power through.

You need the come up with the tiny screws to connect these parts but basically I've connected the CA Joint ($105 from Sony Parts) to the Hyperdeck backplate, and the anton bauer plate to the other side.

The improvement I've realized is quite easy from others here is that the power can easily be run into the camera through the back port using the bottom plug off the IF box. I pulled mine out of the IF box, but I've ordered a bunch of CA joints to have and will order one of those cables next time I need some sony parts.

I'll post pictures of the new assembly, I hopefully will have a bit of time to work on the cam the next few weeks. If you pull the power cable out of the IF box, you can also use a V mount plate just as easily as the Anton Bauer. I am just going to skip the Anton Bauer to DC In plate and keep that as a backup.

A while ago SJX asked me how the old sony lenses look on the f35. I figured I might as well share a photo of my lightweight rig at the same time (without the rods and handles)

Update to a previous post, I have found a buyer for my Ronford Baker kit and I will now be buying an ARRI S-1 shoulder set, the "official" way of doing handheld on the F35.

When that arrives (mid next month) I will let you all know how it compares to my third party solution. I am interested to find out, as the ARRI bracket gets the camera lower, but loses the tilting ability and the cushion.

I have just had the first opportunity to try my ARRI shoulder set (actually an S-2 set) with my F35. Wow. It is amazingly comfortable and very nice for handheld. I am really pleased with it.
