F35 and LUT versus 5219

Perfect- I just would like to see at least one macbeth chart though on both for easier camera calibration between the two. Diffused Backlight on a late afternoon is always welcome : )

Dermot- correct me if Im wrong but doesn't ACES work by essentially using an input IDT ( i.e. "LUT") to convert to Aces color/gamma space then grading, then selecting an output IDT ( again aka "LUT") to your desired viewing medium? Is IDT just a fancy word for a conversion LUT or something else? Would love some specific camera or film IDT's if you have them.

Resolve has no IDT for slog (for F35 or F3) that's the first issue but I know a member here doing ACES with slog using Sony Vegas. Maybe he will chime up, there's a good PDF out there on it which is impressive.

If I was shooting with an F3 or F35 now I'd be using Vegas just for the fact it supports ACES & slog.

This is the key thought behind ACES - taken from Kevin Shaw's white paper linked above;

To work in ACES all sources, whether film video or data, must first be transformedto the Academy Color Encoding Specification. The main purpose of this is toremove any capture characteristics that relate to the camera, lens, sensor, orrecording method and as accurately as possible reproduce the physical light ofthe scene. This is referred to as linear light and has lots to do with the physics oflight and little to do with the way we see. Values stored as linear light are directlyproportional to the light in the scene rather than how the human eye perceiveslight. It is more important that the transform is repeatable than strictly accurate. The result is that all media is not just in the same file format, but it also has a realworld relationship regardless of exposure, lens and other mechanical factors. This is a great starting point for a colorist and a major benefit of the workflow.

FilmMaster does have a IDT for every flavour of Slog imaginable... i have heard reports of Resolve having a somewhat suboptimal implementation of ACES, if it's really that suboptimal i would sooner work in Vegas to match cameras/stocks - at least look at the options, Pablo, Baselight and Mystika also have working implementation of ACES, i think you would be able to do a better ( and faster) job in a system that is optimized for this kind of job, otherwise it's really a test that may have the limits defined by what can be accomplished in Resolve with LUTs, not how well one can match 5219 -to- f35 in 2014...

Yeah OT but cool, I guess if anyone finds an slog IDT that would be quite useful. Looks like ACES will be better integrated overtime, makes a lot of sense.

Well I don't sadly have a MacBeth colour chart here, but what I will do is just setup a side-by-side test which involves as many items in it I can think of.

I'm happy to "open source" the footage as it were. I believe Hunter can get a good scan done of the film. I'm going to get the processing done by a lab here which has been handling Star Wars 7.

Can you borrow a macbeth chart from someone in your area, or something? Where are you located, maybe someone can ship you theirs temporarily.

Re: colorchart, you probably would find one a local rental house, otherwise they are around $50 usd for a color checker version- there are a bunch on Amazon. I have one I would let you use but would probably cost the purchase price to send it there and back. They are nice to have on hand though.

ACES as implemented in Resolve is a bit of a hill to climb… the tools are far from easy or user friendly and some like curves are just plain broken

the IDT's i have are the IP of the software compaies i use and am not free to share them, but even if i did i have no confidence that Resolve would interpret the data correctly

All the software that am aware of that has a workable implementation of ACES cost a fair bit more then Resolve tho… Baselight, Pablo, Mystika, Nucoda all have workable tools, but if you do not have paid versions of Resolve then it might be a stretch to spend 100K on a system that does

That said, if i was to match F35/Slog & 52xx i would use ACES, that's what ACES meant for… anything else is a compromise in 2014, otherwise really what is being tested is the limits of the finishing system, not the media being fed into it - 52xx -vs- F35 in Resolve with a LUT seems a bit like testing a Cooke S4 50mm - VS a 50mm Rokinon with a gopro, you will see the limits of the gopro long before you will see any of the diffrences in what you are testing...

Lets do it!!!
On the meantime, I've spent some time watching a few movies shot on Genesis vs some shot on F35. And I have to say that:
- Generally speaking the ones shot on the genesis show less DR (1-2 more stops) but they look more filmic (filmic = 35mm film stock)
- The ones shot on the F35 look like the stuff I could achieve with my camera with nice post and good lighting. Technically superior but not as good. JUst grading?

So what's the trick on the Genesis then?
I remember watching the BSC digital camera test at Cinemage back at 2010 or 2011 and the F35 footage look exactly like the Genesis except it looked better (it had a bit more DR in the highlights).

Then I read this today: http://www.mergecreativemedia.com/panalog-vs-sony-s-log-f3523/

Panlog S-log for free at Panavision? Aha!!! Who has a friend working at panavision?
Anyone in here want to give them a call? SHould we just rent their camera for a day and copy that LUT? :D

Reading a bit more at cinematography.com: The chips are the same, per Andy Romanoff at Panavision. The electronics downstream of the chip differ. Sorry for the error.

I'll take the fact that the electronics are different as the F35 being newer has more options, it's smaller and uses less power. Similar to what happened between the F35 vs 9000PL?

Speaking of that, I was prepping at Panavision last week and saw an F35 sitting out in one of the bays, was tempted to ask about it but no one was around. If there is a panalog LUT on the f35 we gotta get it!
