F3 w/S-log and Alexa Comparison

Hey guys, here's a little comparison of the Alexa and a F3 w/S-log we did in a couple of real world situations. Matched settings as closely as we could. (Included the 7D in there for some reference.)

Should be able to download if you want.

The F3 will be even more amazing after the new firmware gives it color indexing and an additional stop of latitude. :)

I wish all "versus" tests were this good. An F3 will possibly be my next camera and I just wet myself.

It was a pity that the framing changed so much between cameras, it makes it hard to compare.

agreed.

I have a feeling that the F3 was underexposed compared to the Alexa.
It even shows on the waveform.

yeah, but it looks like they were exposing to protect highlights, not match up waveforms. which seems appropriate to me.

that is awesome.

But why didn't they protect the highlights on both?

hm, do you mean why were certain highlights allowed to blow out? i don't know, i guess i always consider "exposing to protect highlights" to be relative. there's still a judgment to be made if you hope to make the most of the dr.

the difference in exposure is certainly apparent, and caught my eye as well. but looking at the uncorrected images, at hair and skin, in each case i realized i probably would have exposed each the same way.

We did indeed expose for the highlights. We used some passive fill to get the Alexa to look good, and then let the other two fall off where they may, using the same fill in the same position as the Alexa. The F3 is a little bit darker in a few shots because it has a little bit less latitude. The 7D definitely has some blown out portions of the frame because the fill for the Alexa was inadequate for a 7D. The sky looks white because it was white while we were shooting, but not blown out white. Even after color correction, the skies were left to just below that threshold.
