F3: F3 skin tones demo

This clip is taken from a selection of rushes I shot during a documentary I produced last year. Just a reminder to myself more than anyone really of how great the images are from the Sony F3 using S-LOG. With all the current talk around the new Sony toys the F5 and F55, let's not forget how good this camera still is - esp when you consider the crazy prize you can now purchase them for. So F3 shooters out there, stay loyal, save money and get a few more years from your F3! Sparky

Absolutely. Really beautiful skin tones. No need to spend $30K when you can get images that look like that. Great job. Good grading as well.

Many thanks, I absolutely agree. And this footage was just graded with a simple color curve in Sony Vegas - and footage was originally recorded to a Samurai. Shot with CP2 lenses too, used the 85mm which is a great portrait focal range - sold it sadly to help finance a Sony F35!

That's why I'll never quite understand the exodus. For better ergonomics, certainly, but for image quality - I think you've got to look pretty damn close at things to see better images than SLOGged F3 puts out. Oh well, each to their own I suppose.

Lovely stuff by the way Sparky, Zeiss glass and SLOG makes for a really nice combo IMO.

Thanks Grug. This is the thing, your point on ergonomics. They won't be that much different on the F5 - F55. You'll still need a shoulder amount rig with handles etc, a cage for this, and probably a monitor as well. With my F3 set up I have a Samurai attached neatly fixed to the right hand side of the body. But this is great, as it is automatic backs up for everything I shoot. It's there on the Samurai's drive and I can put it on the shelf and leave it there once it is full- ready to access anything I want in the future. With the F5 and F55 you'll have to backup the data on the cards at some stage and transfer it over to something else- this is done automatically using the Samurai. So I wish people wouldn't make such as issue out of ergonomics!
This is my 'mobile' F3 set up with an Easyrig taking the weight - it is a really great set up and very comfortable.

Best wishes Grug

I don't feel I'm getting footage quite that sharp. This is the Fuji Cabrio wide open.

Hey Bill. How fast it the Cabrio? As you well know. often the sharpness and clarity of the image is dictated by the available light - perhaps this may be a slight factor in your case, although I think it looks great. Sparky

Thanks.

The Cabrio is a T/2.9

I measured exposure by taking a reflected reading from a Kodak Grey Card (37IRE on a WFM).
I'm sure my ghetto grade in PP didn't help. It was just a quick down n dirty.

Sparky,
I ran a similar set up with my F3 and Samurai. Never felt like it got in the way, the extra weight actually helped counter balance the rig a little.
