F3: F3 rear Viewfinder Removal

Not really, seems pretty complete.

I took mine off and put it back over a year later when I sold it, had zero issues.

After I put it back on it was literally as good as new.

Just done this - Ive got a little 'gut cam' rig for holding the camera (like a '60s hasselblad)- no EVF is a major boon to this. In general Ive been paranoid about it since day one. Less is more.

Incidentally I took off the plastic slider meaning I now have roll and assign 6/7 available, and was also better able to weather seal the mic holder section while the top was off (ive taken that off too!)

A very good morning so glad to see it go. Thanks for posting.

Yeah, took it off too as per the photos in my first link. A little nervous about being able to reconnect it (my camera is still under warranty until OCt. '14), but yes phew, makes a big difference in terms of packing it and shooting in a more consilidated manner.

Still love my F3. Now equipped with my new Cooke 20-100, it really shines. Beautiful images.

Found a way to go 15mm LWS as well. Which is great, no need to invest in new 19mm or 15mm studio either. Very strong and believe it or not, an FSB8 with a 75mm bowl doesn't even flinch, can definitely pile on a lot more weight with an FF4, mattebox, etc. I'm amazed and grateful for how light the F3 is.

I suppose, but I don't know how you're going to get a follow focus to reach or a matte box to go on there :-)

Arri FF4 and a Vocas MB-450 Mattebox in Clip-on mode (obviously not pictured).

Actually the distance of the lens support to top of bridge would be the same as if it was 19mm.
The advantage of the O'Connor Baseplate is that it is completely height adjustable, so no need for a riser.
I use a Sachtler DSLR baseplate (extended version) which functions like a dovetail in the very center of the steel rods instead of under the camera.
(you can see this in the other photo)

It's not that the EVF is a POS. It's that the location is for a handicam and the camera is too big and heavy to use as a handicam. It would have been nice if someone had devised a ribbon extension and a foward mount it would have been great.

Fair point but every penny counts. Especially 'camera specific' pennies.

While savings is good, there's a LOT to be gained by ingenious gear like the ET Armor: Built like a tank, mounting locations all over the top and side, fits like a glove, etc.
It transforms the camera into a pro-looking/rigged camera, instead of a tinker-toy, plasticky failure. ;)

WARNING: Not having a headphone jack any longer can be a PITA. (especially if you aren't going to an external recorder!)

I don't disagree. But Im not sure how long the F3 will be with me.

As for the HFSocket - any comment on using the phono out below the XLR?

I haven't tried that--I always have a recorder attached to the camera, so can go out from it. I'd not see any reason that you couldn't use it though, but not sure if you could adjust the levels from menu.

Why? What will you be upgrading to? Forget 4K, I'd wait for the second, or even third generation of 4K Cameras. Don't you need an 8K sensor to do 4K properly? The only camera that I know of that does this is the F65.

I'm either looking at a second F3, or a PMW-300K1 for 2014.

Have you seen this http://www.kinefinity.tv/cameras/kineraw-s35/

Very tempting, interesting that it has a 4K sensor, but only films 2K. I think I'll stick with my F3 and film uncompressed on to an Odyssey when I get one.
