F3 or used Red One MX: pros and cons?

Wow, EpicX Stage 3 for sale over at REDUser. Get the EpicX for $10k, just buy the guys RED One you that you will trade in for $17.5k credit. Wonder what that will go for........ tell me that doesn't tempt you over the F3.

It's a lease deal.. you lease the camera from him...

Probably like this farm I wanted to buy... day of going to visit it... the price jumped up... then after leaving... my agent gets a phone call... oh... the deal now is after buying the farm... the seller is going to lease it back from you...
funny that the price jump equaled what the lease would be for a year... so if bought the place.. I'd be paying them to let someone else live there... found out it was a foreclosure also...: )

It's not a lease deal, and leases are not allowed anyway...

He's just trying to find a buyer in advance since he's eligible, but he would have to do the trade in for Epic-X himself then sell it. Maybe he doesn't have the $10k or want the hassle, but either way I'm sure something could be worked out with him.

It will be a lease to own deal, that way it works.... pulled it off the thread on redusers... this was where I came up with the lease to buy deal...

lol - no worries, there are so many posts there with people trying to pre-sell/lease their Red One then finding out about the contract saying they can't....

As if I had enough dough... but I should have looked into the deal where you get the Epic... but get to keep your Red... not sure if someone I know who owns the Red did this or not... and this week its not nice to ask... since his mother passed away...

85K is the camera, EVF and the SRR4 SR memory recorder (like teh HDCam back end for other CineAlta's).

Presume you'd need either the separate single drive reader unit (figure this goes to a PC/Mac host) or multi-reader like unit they're showing (it looks like a VTR) if you're running a DIT station on set.

You could probably use the SR recorder, but that'd cause on-set delays & downtime.

I'm wondering the cost of the SSD style recording drives and how much the extras will come to... what would be a safe guess - maybe another $20K on top? It certainly 'feels' like it'll break $100K minimum (IMO)to get fully operational... and a lot more to be ready for larger scale shoots.

Really looking forward to seeing how this all plays out though... very interesting times :)

Yea i though the DEck was included in that...

In any case 100k will be easily recouped on that investment. Not because the camera will rent so quickly, but because its got staying power and several scales of production built in. from 1080p SR all the way up to 8k RAW. unbelievable.

I think Sony are still missing the mark, here. The key now should be modular design. Arri looks to be on that route, Sony clearly isn't. Also, Sony again is going all proprietary, with their SR recorder, own SSD media, etc. This is a step backwards. Yes, its high end aquisition, but Sony is again not giving options to the costumer.

I think this camera will flop, and in a year or so we will see an F65R or something with a smaller form factor and a modular design. I thing their recorder, which is ridiculous in size right now, will also shrink into a much more portable version.

I think Red has done something very clever: they somehow copied Apple's strategy: They created their own ecosystem, didn't mind offer some things at a loss, distributing free things like firmware, free exclusive software and codecs. That way, they become standard, software companies work on them, and they have an ecosystem that for their costumer is unbeatable as a user experience. Sony, by charging ridiculous prices for everything, and by making every single thing exclusive and pricy, makes them not a very desirable solution. I'm sure that some of these cameras will be sold due to its market leading specs, but it will be nowhere near the success of the Red Epic.

I really want to see the landscape in 1 year...

I really don't see this flopping. (personally speaking, if it performs as well as it looks on paper... it is the most important camera launch of a generation... a true film alternative in every way).

It has a far better form factor than Epic, for general work.... RED will make huge headway with 3D productions, they have the perfect system for that... but for anything non 3D... I can see the F65 being a huge hit.

The specs are just mind blowing.

???

How is it ok if red creates an "ecosystem", wich is completely propriietary.... but ts not ok if sony does?

Fwiw, the epic in its current form is alsmost unshootable. You NEED the I/O module, Audio module, etc.. by th time the cam is bult out (if the i/o mod or audio mod every come out), its the size of a R1 or Alexa or F65.

With the exception of the highly clever alexa, every camera system is proprietary, the panasonic hvx200 up through the viper camers....

Sony has an entire functioning studio system in Culver City and elsewhere. Its what Red wants, and is working towards at the old Desi-Lu studio, but doesn't quite have yet.

Don't even compare it to apple. I hate everything apple. If you put any apple software on a PC it takes over and changes setting, which require some real time and effort to reverse. No apple software is ever going on my computer again.

I went to the apple store for my boss. Their computer crashed and they couldn't ring it up. I told them "You should have bought a PC." They were not amused. LOL

Those are not out yet? I thought it all came in the package?

Not available yet.....

Well perhaps with the X's...... not sure. But as far as I know the redvold batteries and all the other accesoires are rare as hell...
