F3 LAX Camera Test

Can I ask, how did you get away with filming in LAX?

Looks very nice, organic, a little blown out at times. But really, lovely.

Good example of run and gun with the F3, boy nailing focus in s35 is sure a ***** I can not imagine how hard it would have been if you tried to do that with a "Full Frame" DSLR.

Yeah, seriously how did you just roll into LAX and shoot steadicam in the Terminal? I guess if money or friends were in play then it wouldn't be impossible though, right?

This was so good! Be a thousand times better with some ambient sound presence, sound design, etc..

The actor was really interesting to look at. Does it look like it's part of a feature film? yes!!

Thanks. Just got the camera on Monday.

Rented a cp2 25mm and shot this stuff Wednesday for a couple of hours and cut it last night, so not a whole lot of time for sound design. I will add a phone v/o that will help explain what's going on, but really this was just a test to help get me up to speed on this camera.

A little bummed how quickly things blew out, but a lot of that is on me. Didn't have time to properly expose and probably used the wrong gamma setting or something. Also I'm sure 10bit 4222 will help in these kind of situations.

As for LAX. I was surprised too how easily I rolled around that international terminal. There was no steadicam or tripods, just me, a luggage cart, a couple of sand bags and the actor. I will say I felt eyes on me the whole time which made it difficult to take the time necessary to plan a shot and set focus, white balance and exposures. I tend to prefer to ask for forgiveness than beg for permission. I get more shots this way ;)

You are the ultimate guerrilla! I thought, but never would have suggested, that this is how you accomplished this. As he gets to the phone, I was thinking - how easy would that shot be from a luggage cart? Maybe even have the camera obscured under something? None of the crowds seemed the wiser and that's when I started to suspect. I'd love to see a picture of the stealth rig!

make sure you get out of REC709 Gamma and into CINE2 for best highlight protection.

EDIT: the origional was written before I knew better, use CINE1, not 2 for best highlight retention.

Timur you have pretty good gear man! Those Duclos mods are a thing of beauty! What is you rich or something?

Pete - glad to see you adding some sounds and phone VO - actually I want to know this guy's story.

He actually runs and moves very well - it's hard for male actors to do this gracefully and look cool and interesting.

thanks for the tip TC - I was stuck in rec709 - switching to cine2 and see how the highlights roll off
my "rig" consisted of the F3 perched on two small sand bags in the luggage cart basket covered sort of by my hoody.

thanks for the comments and the hot tip on the gamma

Awesome, pete -- great to see some dramatic/narrative stuff on the F3. From what I've seen to date, my biggest concern with the camera is how it handles highlights -- I wouldn't call the roll-off "smooth" by any means -- so i'm looking forward to seeing more Cine settings. Great guerilla work!

No not rich. Just REALLLLLY in debt.

I agree, I thought the acting was spot on. The filming was excellent as well!

Also Timur, just got around to watching your reel. Wonderful images! Excellent choice on What Else Is There as well, I've always thought karin andersson and royksopp worked well together :)

I'm surprised they didn't stop him and investigate at LAX. They generally have a ton of security. I saw the clip with the VO added. Very nice. Fun. It could easily morph into something bigger.
