F3: F3 for docs??

I was overcranking at 35 frm/s and yes I'm used to shooting 10 bit to the KPM so I got used to not worrying too mush about exposure. You need to be more on the money 'cause you don't have the juice to recover.

Element technica Armor + F3 riser + Lightweight rod backet ESSENCIAL F3 all terrain environments

How come you consider the element technica armor essencial?

- Is there a way to use the speedboster with the F3?
Sadly no
- Is there a way to use sony e-mount lenses, especially the new 18-105 F4?
No
- Is it just me or does it seem like people use mostly nikkor glass on their F3s?
For SLR glass - yes Nikon is very sharp and the good lenses are all largely Parfocal

For $1650 Optitek makes a Canon EF to F3 adapter that has a button on the side to control iris ( wankier than Nikon) and also will enable IS (very attractive feature that could work with a Canon 17-55 (not Parfocal) and 24- 105
- For docu work I'd really like to have something in the range of 19-90, does such a lens exist for the F3 with manual aperture control?
I don't think so choices would be
Nikkor or Tamron 17-55, Nikon or Canon 24-70 or 28-70, Canon 24-105 f4
- Can the 32GB SLOG SxS card be used for recording?
It can but its 8 bit and not recommended for Slog. Many people have had good luck with it but your mileage will vary. Better off with 10 bit.
- Pix 240 still the cheapest option for 1080 50p recording? Can the Odissey 7 record 50p over 3G?
Don't know about 50P

Straight answers, thx!:)

Damn Optitek is expensive but even so I can't find it on Optiteks site. Has it been discontinued? And it's a shame that the speedboster doesn't work.
Canon 24-105 f4 would have been great with it. Oh and I see I didn't write the SxS question very good: I meant to ask if the 32GB SxS that had the
SLOG upgrade on it, if this card can be used for recording once the camera is upgraded?
I do believe that SLOG in 8 bit and 35Mbs is very fragile. I would use this only as a backup.

How good is the MTF Nikon adapter? Can you use lenses that don't have an aparture ring with it?

The 32Gb works as a regular SxS card. The key is on a hidden portion of the card and won't interfere with ordinary recording.

How come you consider the element technica armor essencial?

It gives you a new camera - one that's streamlined, doesn't have awkward and useless protrusions (like the original side handle and rear evf), it gives you a top handle that you can feel comfortable lugging the loaded camera around by, allows you to mount just about anything off the top or side of it, allows you to go from tripod to shoulder-mounted in an instant, makes the entire camera body more rugged and capable of surviving on-set impacts or issues - all whilst remaining compact and easy to transport.

After adding a 10-bit recorder to the F3, it's the single biggest and best thing you can do for the camera. For narrative-style production it just makes the camera SO much easier to use, it just stops it from getting in your way and allows you to get on with the business of shooting.

Highly recommended.

They just need to get me my damn low-rider manhandle built already!

I keep talking myself into it and back out of it again. I like the look, but I'm looking at pro's and con's. Please add comments:

Audio: You lose the head phone jack, but you can monitor through other outlets with an adapter. No volume control that way though.
Buttons: You lose the top handle buttons and hand grip buttons, such as stop/start. Program a function button for that. (Do you lose focus assist? Lose "Play the last clip" button?)
Weight: Very nearly an even offset even though it adds a few ounces, but the camera is smaller so it feels heavier.
3D: Good 3D rigs require the cameras to be close together. Getting rid of on handle gets them a few inches closer.
Balance: Mounting your recorder in the back acts as a counter weight to move the center of balance back for shoulder mounts.
Looks: The camera loses it's handycam appearance. I wish the EVF was mountable in a forward and adjustable manner.

The key has nothing to do with the card itself. You can move the key out of the camera and onto any SxS card, as I have done several times with an 8GB card.

It is a G adapter - nikon G lenses are the ones with no aperture - so yes.

good? no idea.

And it works wit other nikon lenses, at least that's says on their site.

Okey I get it, but what about for doc work?

Ah ok, so you just copy the key to your computer or somewhere and that's it?

Yep G lenses have the same mount as older nikkors but need a lever to close the aperture, so a G adapter will indeed work on 99% of older nikkors and 100% of the ones you are considering.

No, the key has to reside either in a camera's software or moved to a physical SxS card, any SxS card. It cannot exist on any two devices at once.

Further, if it's on a SxS card, you cannot access "the key" by computer. It's hidden and not able to be copied.

Haven't used the Element technica, and it may be great but to say its essential has got to be a stretch. I'm happy without it and don't see that it adds that much by reading. maybe I would be convinced if I tried it though.
An EVF ( I suggest the Alfatron) is absolutely neccessary outdoors and I keep a TV Logic 5.6 mounted on the cold shoe most of the time when I'm indoors,

The MTF works fine but over time tends to get loose so the lens has play. However you can tighten the bands that hold the lens in with a tiny screwdriver. If that's too wanky the Optitek is much more solid and allows you to see your f stops on a G lens. Both will adjust irises on a G lens,

The 32G card will remain useable and erase/format-able regardless of what you do with the S log software.

Remember you can get SLog without the one on the 32G card. Just an alternate PP gamma.

Mtf adapter works well - I haven't see any play yet. A simple and sturdy mount, and once the backfocus is adjusted on the PL, all the adapters should stay sharp as well. I'm a big fan of 10 bit 4:2:2, but there is no doubt that slog works fine with XDCAM EX, 8 bit and all - a big improvement over any of of the other PP's. Pix 240 is big, heavy, has noisy fans, and eats power. Gemini's will be cheap soon and DnX is still promised, although this takes a leap of faith to say. I don't think the Odyssey will be released without DnX and this should be passed on to the Gemini at the same time - one hopes.

...it gives you a top handle that you can feel comfortable lugging the loaded camera around by, allows you to mount just about anything off the top or side of it...

Wait, what? Is it that fragile? Let's say you've got a shoulder mount rig: with Vlock batts, an external recorder, lens, handles, base plate, etc. Would it be
safe to take the camera by it's top handle? If not, this is a serious problem.

Great, thx for comfirming.

So once you install the software the key gets removed from the card? Sorry I'm kinda confused about this:)

I was ready to buy the alfatron but then I read something about lag and decided that this would probably bother me to much. As for the MTF it's a lot cheaper than the one from Optitek, but if the MTF get's lose than maybe it's not the right choice. How comfortable is it to adjust iris with the MTF?

So once the software is installed you can format the card?

So for you the MTF works well? Great.

Yeah the PIX240 is to big for me to. Also the odissey is rather large to with it's 7'7" screen. The Atomos Samurai Blade looks like a nice compromise but you can't shoot 1080 50p with it... The gemini is to expensive, even when it's going to get cheaper. It's still a 800x400 lcd screen. Most other recorders have surpassed it, not just in res but in brightness, sat, blacks and colour accuracy. What I'd really like is an Odissey with a 5" screen or an 3.5" EVF/recorder, this would be great.

You can do it ( I certainly have), but with a fully loaded F3, you definitely feel some flex through the regular tophandle when you lift it.

Mine never broke, and I haven't heard of anyone's who has, but the flex and stressing on the plastic is certainly there.
