GH4 Eyecup suggestions?

That's me! I'v been hearing whispers of the need for a custom GH4 eyecup since before its public release (from a new, forward thinking friend in Canada). We've seen some success with the C100, but that camera really, really needs a custom eyecup. I've never been a GHx shooter, or mirrorless at all, so I'm not personally familiar with how much of a "need" a custom eyecup is.

What do you guys think? Is this something ANY GH4 shooter would consider, or do you see the vast majority of folks going with something like a Z-Finder/LCDVF or monitor? How is the reliability of the EVF in terms of focus/composition. Do shooters use or want to use the GH4 handheld with the EVF?

I'd buy a couple and share to the growing number of colleagues who bought GH4

Bern, thanks for posting. I saw that eyecup in the video and tweeted to Dan Chung asking if he knew what model it was and he didn't.

Let us know how it works for you.

I went to 2 photo shops in my town to see if an eyecup solution was available. I didn't succeed. Both stores carried Hoodman brand solutions for Canon and Nikon cameras. I tried a total of 4 different kinds and none of them fit on the GH4. The one for the Canon 5D mark III sort of fit, but it had a bottom lip that prevented it from sitting flush to the camera. This could be cut off, but then it might not fit securely.
So I'm still looking for a solution.

A replacement eyecup is shown at the 3 minute mark of the video review below. Supposedly it was recommended by Dan Chung of Newsshooter.

At the bottom of that page someone speculates it's...

They're inexpensive so I've ordered a pair to test out but they won't arrive for 2-3 weeks.

I just took the standard eyepiece off my nikon 3100 and tried it on the gh4 to see if it fit. It did, so any eyecup that works on the nikon (which is 22mm) should work on the GH4. The only hangup I could see is that the eye sensor, which switches the camera from lcd to viewfinder mode, could get blocked, so you'd have to switch modes manually.

That's really good to know. Thanks a lot.

I got one, and I'm not entirely impressed. The Nikon 22mm mounting piece kinda sorta fits, but wants to pop-off. The extra distance from eye to viewfinder ensures that you can't see the top and bottom simultaneously. I'd say it's only marginally better than using the included eye piece. Someone could do well making an eyepiece specifically designed for the GH3/4. I'm sure there are a lot of people that want this daylight shooting functionality, but don't want to add a loupe the flip-out screen.

Looking forward to it.
We had a hell of a time today with the standard one. Not too good.
Thinking of a DIY enhance with black silicone or something.

Received mine (purchased on ebay) in the mail Sat and just had some time to try it out now.

Not happy. Poor fit. Uncomfortable eyecup. Would want to upgrade to a better quality Hoodman for the eyepiece but the nikon mount isn't quite right, needs some modification to fit. Still like the idea but Ned to hear from others what works better.

Which one did you get?
