C100: Extreme Lens Frustrations

As far as I know, most shots in Hollywood are filmed around 35mm or longer, particularly for people shots, so not a whole lot of shots are wider than 24mm. Going wider you get more distortion and other issues. I have the Tokina 11-16 for wide shots, but I mainly just use it for establishing shots and not people shots, so, not every often, and not often enough to feel the 24-105 is lacking much in the wide end.

Speaking of grass is always greener, I must say that the 24mm is *just* not wide enough for, say...interior shots such as rooms, etc. (I'm talking run & gun here still)
I always poo-pooed the FS100 kit lens, but i really feel they got the tele & wide right with that bad boy. (18-200?) Wonderful range, just not a lot of DOF.

All that being said, I'm glad I own the highly regarded 11-16mm. Works very well with my C100.

We can't whine? Fine, let's just shut down the internet, roll up our sleeves and get some work done!

(any other dog avatars want to chime in? Uga? Let's set a record!)

I'm about to get the 16-35 f4 L as my handheld run and gun. I've already got a 70-200 2.8 if needed and 20mm 2.8 as well. Possibly add the Tokina 11-20 at some point.

You'll rarely see a CU shot on a lens wider than 35mm (or occasionally 28mm) but otherwise this is very untrue.

Are most people missing the point here?

The 24-105 is not wide enough, so Canon expect us to buy extra lenses to quickly change to grab that wide shot etc. The C100/300 is not a run n gun cam right now. At least Sony have been thinking about this by building the 18-105 f4. What have Canon coughed up: A slow variable 18-135 with aperture flicker, weak IQ glass and crappy build.

Yeah your probably right. I will break the natural unfolding of events to a quick pause whilst i run in for a close up. Easy fixed :)
That's why one needs ninja skills. And really, the complaint here is that the 24-105 is not wide enough, so if you're running in for a closeup, well, you could have just stayed back and zoomed in tighter. And if you have to move back further to get the shot since your lens isn't wide enough, then you are probably disrupting things less by being further away.

The point I was making before is that Canon have given us the 24-105 to keep us away from the temptation of filming people with an unflattering extra wide lens. Meanwhile, Sony has you shooting all kinds of bad looking distortion. That's how it works, Sony gives you what you think you want, and Canon gives you what you actually need. Consider 4K Raw; a lot of people think they want it until they have to deal with the workflow, while Canon gives you a lower quality perfect for broadcast codec on the original C300 that gets you hired.

And just because Birdman could pull off a 16mm closeup doesn't mean you should try it at home.

I much prefer Canon's ecosystem, but you're over-thinking things a bit. The 24-105mm was far from designed for the C100.

Cant argue with that, up until a point.

The 24-105 was really made for full frame, the wideness on a full frame equates to approx 18mm on a s35. And 105mm equates to approx 70mm on a s35.

So how about Canon updating a 24-105 equivalent for a crop. Im sure they could make a lovely i.e 18-75mm f4 L Series for their new line of EOS Cams, and should have put one of these lenses out out with them.
