Extra-Tele Video - interesting GH2 feature that may or may not be on AF100

Sorry if this has been posted before. But this looks quite cool. In fact, it would not only allow tele stuff without light loss, but also allow for greater depth of field e.g. you could use the wide end of the 14-140 and get approx 60mm at the DOF field of 14mm. I would think of this as akin to using a small sensor camera - best of all worlds - use the full sensor when you want SDOF or WA, and use ETC when you want increased DOF or extreme telephoto.

I wonder if this will make it out to the AF100. Interesting to see how many other neat tricks all these guys including Canon and Sony have up their sleeves with larger sensors. Can you imagine the flexibility of using a full sensor res vs. binning vs. cropping etc. etc. to control DOF, noise, compression depending on your application....how cool would that be.

I think I recall reading that Jan said in a thread I read earlier that this feature was not going to be on the AF100. I could have been dreaming but recall that...

Would make sense. Would be hard to make low pass filter for both scenarios. The GH2 has one optimized for 16MP (the native pixel size).

You guys know more about the technical side why this would not work well with the AG-AF, for me it's the one feature I will be missing a lot.

Have an old 600 - 1000 Vivitar Zoom sitting at home - with a 2 x tele adapter - and would really have liked to see this thing shooting a part of the moon with ETC...... just for the fun of it.....

It will not have that feature. It wouldn't work on the AF100. The extended optical zoom only works on the GH2 because the GH2's OLPF is tuned for stills, but that's the exact same thing that causes the aliasing and moire. The AF100's OLPF is tuned for video, giving the entire surface of the chip video resolution. So if you cropped into the center, you'd end up with low-res standard-def video.

The AF100 is not a reheated GH2. It's a professional video camera. It does many things the GH2 can't, and there will be some things the GH2 will do that the AF100 can't (like extended optical zoom and still photos).
