GH2 External USB Hard drives - can I dump mts directly to one?

Planning a family vacation in a month. I know I'll be filming like crazy - instead of loading up on SDHC cards, is there a way to dump the raw .mts files from cards to an external disk drive? Or do they make an external disk with a built-in card reader with some sort of a one-touch copy function?

I just don't want to drag a laptop with me if I don't have to.

Thanks for any ideas. And the $250 64GB SDXC is a bit too expensive for me, when Microcenter sells class 10 32GB sdhc cards for $43.

Thanks for any ideas - still trying to research this.

I don't think you will find a cheap solution that excludes a computer of some kind. google found me this which looks insane:

http://www.nextodi.com/product/NVS2500_en.html

But retails for like $1800+:

Buying a bunch of cheap SD cards is an option but you run the risk of a bad card losing your data. I use these:

Small, bus powered, 500GB mirrored raid.

I keep a HyperDrive Colorspace USB hard disk in the glove compartment of my car, where it stays charged by a cigarette lighter adapter. This external hard drive has a built-in SD card reader and software that automatically does an incremental backup of each card you insert into it. It can also display a slideshow of your still images on its LCD screen. Here's a link:

While you can buy a version with a 2.5" hard disk installed, I bought an empty unit and plugged in a 750GB HD I got at Amazon for about $60.

Wow, clearly I did not google long enough. That looks pretty sweet AND cheap.

Some modern Smart phones and PDA's can read the SD cards and you can then store the files into main memory. However, they must have lots of storage to do this, but perhaps you have one of these already... Al

But isn't that storage basically micro SD cards? So all you would be doing is transferring from SD to microSD (or whatever type of card your phone takes). I think he's looking for something more like this:

I've got a trip coming up and that hyperdrive sure looks nifty. does it copy complete file structure? and show mts preview?

Will it auto-backup my .mts files? This looks like EXACTLY what I was looking for!

Your question has been answered several times.

What is it about "...has a built-in SD card reader and software that automatically does an incremental backup of each card you insert into it..." that you don't understand?

Do people still read threads?

And before you say there is no mention of mts files, the thread title clearly asks "...can I dump mts directly to one?"

So yes is the short answer.

Saying you can dump mts to one and one automatically backing up .jpg and .raw (and not necessarily the BDMV folder structure) are two different things. How do I know it's not just archiving certain file types? I was just looking for specific clarity that's all. Ok, thank you, now I know it does what I need it to do.

I wonder if this will work with .mts files?

:)

Hey, they also make a "Hyperdrive Ipad Hard Drive". It's $99. I don't have an Ipad though; but if I don't care about reviewing the footage, what's wrong with just connecting this directly to my computer?

I will research this.

Nevermind, apparently it doesn't have a card reader (the $99 "bare" model).

So one last question before I get yelled at again - will the UDMA support thumbnails of RAW GH2 footage? Be gentle... :)

raw footage as in mts or jpeg preview? id be happy just to see the jpeg preview of the footage and not necessarily have it play the mts.
