External mic recording mono

Hi, I just got the rode ntg-1 for my dvx100b, and i connected via XLR into channel one and i flipped the channel 1 select to input 1 and the input 1 to on (for the phantom power).

Then I connected some head phones to listen to it and it seemed like both sides of the phones were working but when i would talk directly into the mic the left channel would go up dramatically. Why is this?

Is there a way totally cut out the onboard mic and record stereo with my RODE mic?

PLease help?

Thanks!

You have two places to set the input. First, on the front of the camera, next to the lens, you can set line- or mic-level input for Ch. 1 and Ch. 2, independently. Second, on the side of the camera where you can switch the source per channel.

Notice that the first of those two switches can select internal mic, Ch. 1, or Ch. 2. The second switch can select internal mic or Ch. 2.

When using only one, external mic as you are doing, connect the mic to Ch. 2, make sure Ch. 2 is set to mic-level. You need only turn phantom power onto Ch. 2 input.

Now, set both input selectors to Ch. 2. The mic is now recording to both channels. Set the second record channel to about 5dB lower than the first, just as a safety in case of clipping on sudden peaks.

Awesome, thanks a lot. I really don't know why i did not think of that, but thanks again tremendous and fast help!
