GH5 External HFR Recording - Ninja V

Hello hello,

As we all know, the Ninja V will be a great new recorder for the GH5, offering 4k60p in 10-bit ProRes.

My question is, will it be able to record 1080p high frame rates (120p, 180p, etc.) in 10-bit ProRes as well? Or is the GH5 and/or Ninja V limited to 8-bit for HFR external recording as well. Being able to shoot 10-bit high frame rates would be a really big asset for me.

I've searched online and can't find much (if any) information on this.

Thanks!

8-bit...there aren't many cameras in the world that offer 120p/etc @ 10-bits.

It's also worth considering if the camera even outputs 120p/etc via HDMI.

Most don't and only offer that internally.

Also meant many cameras for that price.

Obviously all RED, Blackmagic, and ARRI cameras provide this (where applicable), and the rest have their certain offerings (for much more money).

I don't know of any cameras that output 1080p120 over HDMI (even though the HDMI spec supports this and there are lots of cameras that can record 1080p120 internally). It would be nice if the camera manufacturers started supporting this as an output option.

The only devices I have seen that can output at 120fps over HDMI are graphics cards.

Def...graphics cards, gaming systems, and possibly some web/industrial cameras.

Atomos even mentions two out of the three on their specs sheet after the 120p note:

"^ From supported HDMI sources such as gaming consoles and graphics cards."

Ah OK thanks. I thought it might be a possibility since the EVA1 outputs 120p and 240p 10-bit in 2k...does it not? Could be wrong.

AFAIK it's the raw signal via SDI that is being recorded, just like from the Varicam LT, Sony FS700 and Sony FS5. The recorder transforms the signal to either DNG, ProRes or ProRes raw (Atomos for EVA-1).

That's too bad! Thanks everyone. Another quick question, can you do simultaneous recording, to SSD and SD card as a backup?

Yes with every resolution/framerate except 10-bit 4K/60p in which internal recording is disabled (8-bit is fine).

It sounds like you want a Pocket...10-bit HFR, 10-bit 4K/60p internal/external simultaneous recording...

My read of the Pocket manual looks like the HDMI is 10bit 4:2:2 1080HD not 4K. Also if one attaches a USB C drive it replaces the SD slot in the camera operation. Don't see any mention of simultaneous record either. Options in the manual are either CFast, SD or Fullest card. No mention of dual recording. You could certainly record 4K internally and use HDMI to record HD but you can do that too on the GH5 and at the same time dual record to the SD cards.

Where is the 4K pocket manual? Did they release it already?

On their PDF, they usually note the shooting resolutions and framerates, and then a second chart a bit below (called "standards") shows what the HDMI and/or SDI can support (in this case HDMI).

I would be very surprised if it was limited to HD...Blackmagic doesn't do that.

Wow, you're totally right:

"The full size HDMI connector supports 10-bit 4:2:2 1080p HD video with support for
HDR and two channels of embedded audio. Use the touchscreen menu to set a clean
feed or include overlays on the output."

I guess it's too much for it to handle 4K.

The logic is that 1080P is good enough for monitoring since you can record 4K ProRes or RAW externally straight to a HD via USB. Personally, I wish the HDMI was full 4K (can be useful for a director's monitor, for example) but if this compromise was necessary to enable some of the features I care much more about (like professional codecs) then I will accept it. Honestly, from early accounts, the built-in 5 inch screen looks like it may be good enough for critical focus, eliminating the need for any external monitor on many shoots.

This is confirmed. You can simultaneously record to CFAST and USB, but if you record to SD, you can only record to SD.

It's the first BM camera to not support 4K out (from the ones that shoot 4K). I guess I'm just used to seeing it from some of the others (BMPC, URSA, URSA Minis, the Studios), which all do via SDI.

As far as the screen, it's probably the VA panel which is used on other cameras and is very good for monitoring...plus their focus peaking has always been excellent.

From the manual I did not get the impression that dual record was a feature at all. One can specify which card is the first to start and then go to the other when full or let the camera decide which is the fullest to start. The SD electronics are associated with the USB-C connector so if there is a USB drive attached the SD slot is unavailable. However I still did not see anything in the manual about recording to USB drive and the CFast at the same time. Can you give me the page reference for that?
