External HD?

Hey everyone, I don't know where else to ask this, so I'm going to do it here. Being a fellow FCP editor, I was wondering what a good external HD would be for use as a scratch disk? I need to buy one asap!

You'll hear a debate about brands, but I think you will get a consensus to go with Firewire 800 or e-sata for connectivity.

I bought a LaCie 1 TB big disk I returned the first one since it was humming within the first week. This one (1 day old) seems to be working fine. I am withholding any recommendations on this but a Google search will show mixed reviews.

Hi Cracker,

Incidently that is one of my many nicknames too.

The only difference is the one I have has 800 FW. I think they are both the same inside. Cross your fingers like me.

Well, it's my REAL name. Just kidding! Got the drive yesterday, set it as my scratch disk. Fingers are crossed.

I'm using USB 2.0, uhhhhhhhh, I should have known this beforehand. I don't have an eSATA connection.

Not sure if it will do any good now but can't hurt:
Best performance V durability V cost = Maxtor (triple interface)
Best performance V durability = G-Tech (triple interface)

I seam to hear a lot of negative reviews about recent Lacie drives...

Do a google search on Lacie problems.

There are a lot from what I and others have seen.

I have been running Lacie for Years with no issues. But the Maxtors I have run flawlessly as well. I mainly use large Internal drives on my mac anyway. I probably should'nt but with 2 kids, 2 new cars and a very expensive mortage, Internal drives are usually a little cheaper.

i have been using 4 lacie 250GB with no problems
1 250 lacie porche design one (dont really care for it)
Fantom Drive 1TB with some minor issues (noise & mounting)
just picked up mercury OWC 500 GB so far no issues

We used to use LaCie a few years back when they were made in France and nice quality. But then they moved all the manufacturing to China and reliability took a nose dive. These days we use G-Tech, Dulce Systems, Ciprico and CalDigit.

I'm not saying that all Lacie's are bad.

I'm just reporting my and other's experience lately, which seems to have changed.

I would get a granite digital case and a zipzoomfly.com HDD over a Lacie HDD.

Get a Antec MX1 box. It has USB and eSata. Comes with a bracket with the eSata connector, then you find your extra SATA connection on your motherboard ( talking about the Intel) and plug-in the cable. The Antec is empty. It's really easy to change drives. The box has a very quiet fan and a nice rubber cushion for the drive. I have 4 of these babys. I only use Seagates.

I use bootcamp and can read files between MAC and Edius.
