External HD and airports

So, in my travels next year we will be flying a good bit, and I was wondering what the best way would be to transport my external drives that hold raw footage from shoots?

Did a search on the subject and found one thread from a few years ago that said the security check points would not damage equipment...is this true/ still true?

Can anyone with recent first hand knowledge share some info? Thanks for the help!

Don't know why anyone would think security screening would damage the hardware, short of some ham-fisted TSA guy with a hammer :2vrolijk_08:,

but I always carry a couple USB passport type drives in my laptop bag, and everything goes through the scanner just fine. I even got scanned by the new microwave at LAX last year.

In fact, I'm amazed at all of the electronics ands cables I have in my laptop bag, and nobody ever wants to look at it, and yet I can't take a tube of toothpaste through security. What a system.

I figure with footage that has not been backed up yet, one can never be too careful!

Thanks for the insight!

My laptop's been through hundreds of airport scanners around the globe, never been an issue, its drive works fine. I've taken external drives through, no problems. Back everything up of course, but you shouldn't have a problem with airport scanners.
