EXTERNAL HARDRIVE. Recomendations?

small screen -- so files can be seen.

Are you asking if the hard drive as a video screen and software to enable you to view the files?

Or something else?

You might looks at the forensic drives over at wiebetech.com

I believe when you are offloading from a P2 onto a ext. hard drive the card makes a partition in the drive. The P2 (or the software) can only make 15 partitions. So, with a 8G card, you can only utilize 120G of hard drive storage before you need another hard drive. Is that right?

yeah, i was wondering about a backlit display -- like on the Firestore.

but, although a bit cumbersome, an external enclosure, a 400 gig HDD and one of those forensic drives would be as secured as a firestore, 4X the storage and half the price.

i didn't know such a device existed. i'm gonna take a closer look.

thanks, David S.

Please excuse my ignorance - but what is the benefit of using that forensic device? Was that in response to the post about retrieving lost data on the burnt up Lacie - or is it useful in someway to the P2 workflow?

Straight to hard drive w/ P2?

Straight to hard drive w/ P2?

...Is there a method of recording directly to hard drive from the camera without P2 cards on board?

No ignorance detected.

When i chimed in, the discussion was revolving around the HVX feeding data directly to an average, everyday external drive. My concern was that, as far as I knew, none of these external drives had any kind of visual confirmation of files being transfered successfully to that external drive. (aside from a flickering LED, which IMO isn't sufficiant in most cases) So, it's possible that the footage shot is maybe corrupt, or maybe never even made it to the harddrive.

The Firestore has a display that shows the files you have just captured. Albeit, an 1800 dollar display, but a display, nonetheless. I assume those files can then be manipulated in some ways -- moved, opened, seperated, deleted, etc. (I don't know that for sure, don't know enough about Firestore) But, it's the display on the firestore that seperates it from the average external drive.

That forensic drive will confirm the footage you just shot. It'll tell you much more definitively that you got your shots ready and waiting on the drive.

It's very possible I'm talkin' nonsense. The overwhelming majority of the folks on this board have forgotten more than I'll ever know about the HVX and the best ways to use it.

Thanks for the explanation. That's interesting.

Question is, can you rig one of these up with a hard-drive, enclosure and battery supply...?
