Just purchased my hvx200. Now i need to choose how i am going to unload my p2 cards from the camera.

I want something portable. But i dont feel like spending the 1500 on the P2 STORE. Any alternatives to this device, small and portable. I went to comp usa and they have these small external hadrives, do these work?

Or else i am going to settle for a powebook g4. Is this method fast and safe, which is what i want. To be shooting while another card i have just used is being unloaded into my laptop.

thanks

Even with an external hard drive, you will still need a computer to offload the P2 card, so if you're not going to go with the P2 Store, then a laptop is a good solution.

I have several producers who are enamored with the PowerBook G4 as a solution. I happen to prefer the P2 Store.

Many on this forum will also suggest an inexpensive PC laptop because Panasonic ships free additional software with the camera that makes using a Windows PC a little bit more streamlined than a Mac (for this purpose).

Hope this is helpful!

Good luck!

Any usb drive with OTG feature can do this without the use of a computer. Just plug the drive into the camera, set the camera in "PC" mode, press the button on the hard drive... voila! You can get these drives with rechargeable batteries otherwise an external power source is needed (won't work on bus power).

If you have an external USB hard drive without the OTG function this is a neat little device that with make it one.

and thanks everyone. very helpfull

It depends on the drive capacity you are looking for and whether or not you need independence of AC power. Most external Firewire drive enclosures are SBP2-compliant these days, so if you are filming someplace where you can plug in the hard drive to offload the P2 card(s), you have MANY options.

One option that makes you independent of AC power would be the FHD-254UF+ enclosure, into which you would install a 2.5" laptop hard drive of whatever capacity you need. Such drives are available in capacities of up to 160GB. The enclosure supports USB 2 and Firewire and can run off bus power when connected to a computer, but it has a rechargeable battery built-in which you would need when connecting it to the HVX200 (it doesn't supply bus power).

Well then! I stand corrected! I guess you don't need a PC to offload to a hard drive.

Has anyone actually used one of these OTG HDs this yet? Certainly sounds like another interesting option.

That's what is so great about these cameras! So many different ways to make it work for you!

What is your opinion about the following external HDD :

Lacie 2 TB fw 400/800 extreme 7200 rpm 16MB 1106 euro
Lacie 1 TB USB/fw 800 7200 rpm 8MB RAID5 995 euro
Maxtor onetouch 3 turbo 1 TB USB/fw 7200 rpm 16 MB 799 euro

or is building one youself cheaper and better? If so can someone do some suggestions.

I see alot of issues with the Lacie's where I moderate at a different board.

Never a fan of Maxtors.

Try Wiebetech.com or granitedigital.com

do any of these external drives provide verification of files being copied successfully?

if not, could be a costly assumption.

I have a nephew that has a friend that crashed 2 Lacies with the HVX. One Lacie just totally burned up. They recommended that it should be sent to a data forensics company to retrieve the footage. Well that's gonna cost $4500.
