External harddrive recommendations?

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could recommend me on an external harddrive (firewire 800, 7200 rpm) that I can use to save HD videos/edit files on? I'm kind of stuck in choosing.

Thanks

Which Mac are you using it with?

What high definition codec from what camcorder?

These really need to be answered.

For the time being, quicktime motion jpeg from a panasonic lumix G2.

Imac (version 10.6.2).

I recently bought a CaldigitVR 4TB external drive. I have it set up to mirror the other drive in RAID 0 or 1 I can't remember. I bought it straight from Caldigit which at the time was running a special price on them. It has 1 FW400, 2 FW800, E-SATA, and USB 2.0

I use AVCHD, and would recommend a workflow that included a minimum RAID 1 (debateable), that housed your daily work, as it offers instant failover for drive failure. Then I copy an archive of footage to a dockable raw drive on one of the many drive holders that plug in via either eSata, FW or USB (my dock has all three ports), then store the archive drive in a vault nearby (bank safe deposit box etc), in case meth freaks break into your office and steal all your gear (it does happen, and the best way to test this theory is to simply wake up and put a black plastic bag over your machine, pretending it's now stolen, burned down or whatever What would you lose, and do about it? How much would it cost you in time and money?). That way your daily project is archived. Some folks then backup to to a second tier, where you have a backup drive locally or in the cloud that you backup your work to daily, so you have the following:

Real time (RAID array, your choice)
Near line (on premise, or in the cloud, today - 1 or less)
Off Line (off premise, safe from harm, raw original footage, key important client jobs as need be).

You should consider at least a 1TB drive at a time, more if possible. You will use it up quickly!

That should get you started...there's much more to it than that. A consultant can bring you greater detail if this is for a business.
