I think this is in the wrong spot but It seemed better than any other part of the forum because I use FCP.

I am going to purchase an external hard drive soon out of necessity but I don't have much money at all. I was wondering what I could get for under $100. I found these on ebay and they seem to be great deals. Am I missing something?

Should I avoid these? I really need alot of storage space but don't have to much mola as I said.

If you are going to use these to capture and edit video, they are USB2, not firewire.

And if that is their purpose, buy the best, not the cheapest.

USB2.0 transfers in bursts, NOT sustained streams. so as a general rule its not an adequate working format for video. good for backup/transfer/archive - but not to work from.

I am getting mixed messages. Should I get one that has firewire ports? Is that what you all use? And what are the disadvantages of getting a cheaper HD?

No one here is giving you mixed messages that I can see.

I read David S.'s post and I can see how that might be read to mean he's suggesting USB not firewire, on a quick read. But everyone here is saying get firewire. I hear some PC people say they edit on USB all the time, but that's definitely not the case

You will encounter Video Pros that say get the best all the time. And they are right. But I too am on a budget and just can't do that. So ....

GO TO NEW EGG!!!!!!! :)

You can sort by price and interface. So you can find the ...
  • cheapest
  • firewire
hardrive available AND YOU CAN READ USER REVIEWS OF THAT DRIVE. :D
Some brand name drives suck. I have a $700 1.5terrabyte Maxtor that is now nothing more than a paperweight. And I've read countless reviews of people that say they had several of these all of them failed. They'd send one back under warranty, the next one failed, then they'd send that one back and so on and so on until they gave up.

Again - it may be cheaper to buy an internal drive and get an external enclosure seperatle.

You want a SATA or Serial ATA and firewire.

If you are editing SD or have you can get away withe an IDE internal drive and firewire.
