All I want is to be able to search through the footage, mark in/out points and capture.[/quote]

Not every camera follows the entire FW-DV-VTR control standards, especially in small consumer cameras. It is generally a cost cutting issue since you can use a cheaper mechanism without capstan control and the like.

Re: External Decks

Ditto probelms with the GS9 Panasonic camera. Timecode doesn't come through so FCP can't deal with capturing normally. Unfortunately the official FCP equipment supported list is out of date and most of the cameras listed are not available.

All Canon and all but the lowest end Panasonic use either DV or DV basic for Fire Wire. The problem is that consumer and prosumer often comes from different divisions, and they do not alway keep to the same page.

Re: External Decks

Just checked my old Sony TRV11 and it works fine for capturing video recorded on DVX100. Not totally clear how to check compatability since fcp list is out of date.

Use the old list for now. Basically, any camera which supports straight FW supports FCP (Apple afterall wrote the standard).

Re: External Decks

You would think that FW cameras would be compatible but as I and a few others have found some cameras don't support transmission of timecode data. I can see the image and I can capture with apps that ignore timecode but to fully use FCP it's required.

The problem with the old list is those cameras aren't even made anymore. I can't buy them new, I'd have to go to eBay to get a used camera. Since there's no up to date compatible list and since the vendors don't make a distinction it's tough to make sure you're getting a camera that supports real timecode.
