External capture/storage?

Hi,

I just received the HVX200, and have a project shooting nature/scenic shots.

What are the realistic options for transferring footage from the HVX into storage out in the field?

Do you shoot directly to a laptop, external hard drive, iPod or just P2 cards?

I'm looking for the best storage system and work flow for long scenic shots.

Keep in mind I'll be away from AC power.

Thanks for your help and advice.

Yeah the P2 Store is a really nice solution! We used it at the Amy Grant Concert a couple of weeks ago. Dumped like 5-6 cards on it during the concert. We were mainly getting reaction shots and different angles that the varicams were't getting.

It is really nice to have when you can't setup a laptop and external hard disk plus it has a nice verify feature!

Sounds like the P2 store might be the way to go. The verify feature would be very nice to have.

Have any of you tried exporting to an ipod directly from the camera? It would be rad if you could preview the clips on it as well. But the ipod probably can't read an mxf file.

When you dump files to an external hard drive from the HVX, does the hard drive get reformatted every time you connect it to the camera for a transfer? Or is it just formatted the first time you connect?

OK, what stupid thing am I doing wrong. I want to record to an external hard drive for my archive while also recording to P2. According to the manual, I have the HVX firewire port connected to the hard drive. I made a virtual P2 folder on the root of the external drive, and it shows contents, audio, etc, and the P2 viewer says it is activated (or whatever word they use for meaning it has been configured and is ready for use). I set in the camera menus "other functions - 1394 control" to "Both" which says it should record to both the camera and the HDD at the same time. I set the 1394 CMD SEL to either "REC P" (the default) or "STOP".

Nothing records to the HDD, but ok to the camera. I have switched cables in case one was bad. Nothing.

The HDD is PC NTFS, but according to the manual, the 1394 port is correct for this operation, not the USB as when going directly from camera to the computer (which works fine).

Any thoughts, oh brilliant colleagues?
