Ok i posted some time back about an exposure problem I was having with my 7d when using old manual primes (supertakumar and yashica). the problem was the meter would tell me i'm properly exposed or even one stop under when the scene was totally blown out..and by totally i mean everything is white...no detail. this would happen on occasion and more and more often in recent time. For the most part when the meter was working it would meter a bit hot and i would usually underexpose by a stop in bright sunlight as most of us probably do. However when it feels like not working it just is totally haywire. This would happen at ANYTIME. It would literaly be working when i turn on the and i turn it off and back on again and its out of wack. I thought it mite be a prob with the camera but lenses that are designed to communicate with the camera (tamron 17-50, canon 50 1.8) expose fine. Meter works all the time everytime. So i doubt its the camera as its the non propriatory lenes that arent working sometimes ie old manual primes.
This leads me to my solution. I have now been using the histogram in conjuction with the meter and did extensive testing today when this anomoly happened again. (can only do it when it decides not to work). Luckily( or unluckily) for me it was screwing up all day so i could test alot. What i have found now (with histogram comparisons of lenses that communicate with camera) is that when this anomoly happens what the meter says is underexposed by 3 stops is usually properly exposed. I spent a long time doing this today cuz i was sick of this problem and nobody seemed to be experiencing it (one reason i was thinking it was just my camera). Anyway so hopefully if any are experiencing this...then test it for yourself and see what meter says its underexposed by 3 stops...check the histogram. Also comapre it with readings from lenses that "talk" to the camera. Hope this helps.
nb. this is JUST when the camera decides to screw itself and me in the process...usually for the most part it works fine.
However I still dont know what causes it
