Exporting Movie

Robbie Comeau

Como's back. back again
I have a file I exported.

I didn't use the Quicktime Conversion, but the first one on the list (that exports it full res, the way it is in the timeline)....I forget what it's called, my mind is blank. Export as Quicktime Movie?

Anyway, it's an mov file.

I put it online for this guy to download and view. It's 4.7 gigs, and it IS an mov file.

I think he's a on a PC....And he's having trouble. Is it cause he doesn't have a mac? I mean, it's a quicktime file...

If worse comes to worse and he can't view it, is there anything he can do to view it? (DVD, converting, etc..)

Thanks,

Robbie

Does he have Quicktime installed on his computer?

What codec did you use? If it's something like ProRes, he might not be able to view it even if he has Quicktime installed. If you used Export > Quicktime Movie, then the codec is the same as you used in your timeline.

If you are sending it over just for initial review, you might want to compress it to something more web friendly (4.7 GB is a bit much to download), like H.264. Use Export > Using Quicktime Conversion or convert using one of the web presets in Compressor.

I'm not using Pro Res.

I did use Quicktime Movie.

He has a high speed download, so that's not an issue.

But yea - I'll try Quicktime Conversion, and make it smaller.

Thanks,

Robbie

Using QuickTime conversion will take a while. Did you export "current settings?" If so, take your already-exported QuickTime movie, and use Compressor to convert it to a manageable h.264 file, same as you would for upload to Vimeo.

And make sure that the other guy has the latest version of QuickTime for Windows.

The reason he can't view it is because he doesn't have the proper codecs to decode the format. QuickTime is only a file wrapper. It's likely to be in the original formatted codec such as DVCProHD, or ProRes etc... Unless a user, mac or PC, has the codecs installed on their system, they won't be able to decode the files for playback.

The first necessary piece of information is what codec was it exported to from what sequence setting?

That dictates whether it can be played on another computer.

Hi Robbie,

You exported a Final Cut Pro Quicktime Movie. Unless the person has Final Cut, he will not be able to view the quicktime movie you exported. Quicktime Conversion takes awhile, but is an option for compressing the file down.

But the best thing to do is export it is a Final Cut Pro Quicktime Movie as you have done, then bring that movie into Compressor and then compress using the Quicktime Download option that uses the h.264 codec. This is the best and fastest way that I know. The FCP Quicktime Movie serves as a master, and then you bring it into compressor to deliver it however you want.

Cheers.
