exporting 1080 footage to 720?

Does compressing 1080p footage down to 720p result in a better picture? I see a lot of people doing this and I'm trying to figure out why. Is it just for better web playback?

Yes, just for better web playback...

It also gives me a bit of room to zoom/crop if needed. I generally shoot in 1080 and edit/deliver in 720.
