Exported footage much darker...

Well, as the title states, I'm having an issue with the footage I am exporting looking much darker than it appears while I'm editing it in FCP 7. I am exporting it as Apple Pro Res 4444 with the size set at NTSC 720 x 480 DV. I am editing on an I5 15" MBP watching the exported footage on Quicktime version 10.

Could it be Quicktime? or perhaps maybe export settings?

1) What you see in your FCP viewer is not accurate to your actual video. Do not trust it.

2) What you see in QuickTime Viewer is not accurate to your actual video. Do not trust it.

To further complicate matters, what you see in QT is not going to match FCP. I'd expect it to look darker. Or fuzzier. Or more washed-out.

Truth is, you need to monitor your video externally on a true production monitor when you edit. And if you want to see what it really looks like once exported, dump it to an HD medium from which you can play to your HD monitor. All that aside, use your scopes and trust them.

Looks like H.264 exports exactly as it looks in FCP. For archiving purposes, what is the better choice? Pro res or H.264?

Why is DV not an option? It sounds like that's what your source footage is if you're exporting at 720x480 DV NTSC.

Use the QT Player 7 application, not QT X.

in the QT Player 7 app, go to preferences, and under the General Tab, click on Enable Final Cut Studio color compatibility.

View your footage using QT 7 player.
