Export and maintain quality

Hi there. I'm having difficulty maintaing the same quality I am getting in my timeline from my short film shot on the canon 5D and also im getting extremely 'soft' results when converting that master footage to h.264 in compressor or even using quicktime pro. Now i know that the common practice and information is that if i simply choose to export a self contained movie from my timeline then theoretically there should be no quality loss but there blatantly is. Has anybody else had this issue? Im wondering if i export as a jpeg image sequence and then use after effects or something else to convert the footage it may help?

My timeline is set up as 1080 using prores lt and is set up to render all footage in 10bit yuv at best.

Are you exporting as a self-contained movie at your current project settings?

Are you viewing your footage during editing on an external monitor, or just on your computer screen? A properly-calibrated external monitor is the only way to know exactly what your footage looks like. The canvas window in FCP isn't anywhere close to accurate.

Also, are you noticing the post-export softness and other issues when you view in QuickTime Player? That is the last/worst place you should be judging the quality of your video as QT player really doesn't do it justice.

Hi there, Im viewing on a properly calibrated external monitor hooked up to my blackmagic card. im editing in pro-res as thats the common practice for 5d footage. i do export a self contained movie at current settings but it just not as sharp and even ever so slightly more noisy in particular areas.

Again... is it not as sharp when viewing the exported video in QT Player? That's kind of to be expected...

Can you upload a sample? I can take a look at it and tell you what is going on.

Also try to post a JPEG of your source in FCP, and the result in Quicktime X.

If you're scaling the footage or trying to maintain proper gamma you might want to consult with a professional compressionist.
