Im currently using a PC and adobe, and am strongly considering moving to mac and FCP etc .... I find adobe to be a complete pain. Random error messages that make no sense randomly occuring during a process Ive done the same way numerous times before happening far too often for my liking (a quick google shows me many others are having these exact same problems with no solutions)

1. Finding the idea of learning how to edit in a new program daunting

2. Wondering if going to a Mac has any real advantages to me or is it just hype?

3. I currently edit avchd straight up as I have a powerful spec. Will transcoding to prores leave me dissapointed or will I not visually notice a difference. I appreciate lossless codecs, but if I cant see a loss with my eyes, thats fine by me!

I edit AVCHD straight as well on CS4, and it plays back relatively decently (once I move to CS5 in a bit things will be much more smooth).

I have to edit on FCP for school, and I've always disliked having to transcode before editing. I moved away from tape so I don't have to wait for my footage to prep itself. However, once transcoded your footage would play back fine - and you won't see a visual difference in the transcoded format.

What issues are you having with your editing?

Just very strange, random problems.

Taking today as an example

1. Went to export mp4 using h.264 as normal. Same settings, same avchd file type. Would not work. Got a random error code that I googled but found no solution to.

2. Went into encore to make a dvd. Cranked it up, started doing it as per usual...didnt work. Close encore and started up again - was incredibly careful to follow same process, worked fine.

3. Premiere again... imported a clip, then about 3/4 of the way through the audio drops. I can see the audio, so its definitley there.... play the file in WMP to check and sure enough it works... close premiere, open it up and put the same file back on the timeline, and it works fine.


What on earth is going on with my premiere?!?
 
You need to convert to dvcprohd .....all your problems will be gone.
Will need some extra Hard Drives .

The only times CS4 crashes is when I speed up a 6min , 30.000X .
 
Those are strange errors! I've had the audio problem before, where Premiere will stop playing back audio, although it clearly is in the timeline. This has happened with SD, HDV, etc in the past, I'm not sure why. A quick restart of the program always fixes that.

I'm not sure why you are having errors with exporting. It may be as Everts said, that you might want to consider transcoding first. If that works (and I bet it does) it'll save you the cost of buying a new system and software. AVCHD is a pain to extract from for editing on the fly, and CS4 does a decent job at it, but I still have hiccups even with a quad-core.

Im now having trouble exporting from cs5 as an uncompressed avi.

I want to take a clip from prem into AE. Is there a better way to do this? Dynamic link is also not working.

I obviously want to keep maximum quality
 
Have you installed CS5 properly? You might want to consider uninstalling the suite completely and trying again. Perhaps there was an error loading it on your computer.

If you cannot export from Premiere to Media Encoder, and you cannot use Dynamic Link, your only other option would be to File>Import>Premiere Pro (something like that), where you import the Premiere project file, and it imports everything into its own layer. Depending on how many files you have it can get big and cumbersome, but it'll work.
 
It says dynamic link wont work because I need production premium... I have the master collection...

Ive never had much luck importing premiere files into after effects!? I'm obviously missing something (probably simple!), but Ive never managed to get it working
 
Master Collection trumps Premium (as it has every program)...that doesn't make much sense to me. :huh:

But it's very easy to import a Premiere project intro AE.

Literally it's File > Import > Adobe Premiere Pro Project...

Find the project file, and AE will work for a while to import all your assets. That should do it.
 
When you drop an AVCHD file into a Premiere CS4 timeline, you have to wait a little while (seconds or minutes if it's a long clip) for it to transcode the audio into something it can play. If it's only part-way finished when you start playing the clip, at that part-way point your audio will seem to stop. Solution: restart Premiere, import footage to timeline, go grab cup of coffee, then start timeline.

Pain in the butt. I'm hoping it's fixed in CS5.

About going from premiere into After Effects by importing the premiere project file...

1. I do music videos alot, so lots and lots of cuts. Can i just drag the entire sequence into the timeline, and stick an adjustment layer over the top for colour grading? This works? Why has no-one ever told me ?? :D

2. Once the above is done ^.... anyway to get it back into premiere again without rendering and without dynamic link?

Yep that works! It's exactly what I did for a music video finished recently.

I don't think so. It's easy enough to get the sequence INTO After Effects without Dynamic Link, but impossible to transfer from AE to PP WITHOUT dynamic link. Just how it's set up. If dynamic link won't work for you, you'll have to export from AE to an .avi or something if you want to put it back in Premiere.
