Yesterday I had the opportunity of using for 30mn the Leica Noctilux 50mm f/0.95. I went to shot some video in the funfair of Bordeaux. I did not have ND variable filter (Leica is 60mm filter thread), so I had to use fast shutter speed, so sorry for the jitter effect... I try to do my best in this short time with this 8000€ lens.
Today I went to the same place at the same hour with my SLR Hyperprime 50mm T0.95 lens, and I did the same shot, in the same condition (short time and no ND filter).
This movie is a quick test where you can see in a alternate editing the difference between these two lens, wide opened at 0.95. This was not shot the same day so the light is a little different, but the weather was quite the same (cloudy with sun sometime).

My opinion ? mmmm the Noctilux is an extraordinary lens, good rendering at f/0.95, smooth aperture ring. This lens is a little smaller and lighter than the SLR Magic lens. It's in M mount (Leica). The problem : the Noctilux is too expensive for me, 8000€ (10600$) !!! Please note that the SLR Magic I've used here is a prototype lens. It's be available in september in M mount, it's price is not fixed yet, but it will be around 2300€ (3000$), 3.5X less cheaper than the Leica.

The music mix is an homage to a movie director and one of his movie. The first who will find the name of the director and the title of the movie will win the two lenses... (I'm joking ;) ).

I'm sure there's a market for this lens, but I personally am not in that market segment. Many (though not all) GH2 owners are price sensitive, which is why they went for a sub $1000 camera in the first place, and for those folks, whether it's a $10K or $3K lens is la la talk anyway, purely theoretical. There's no way I'd buy that lens - $10K is my entire feature film budget. Of course, this lens can go on other cameras and addresses other markets so this is not meant as any kind of knock on the lenses, but here in the GH2 section, I suspect that's rather rarified air. Sort of like looking at a Ferrari car on a Kia budget - window shopping, not wallet shopping. Nice to dream about, but that's the extent of it.

Not all GH2 owner took it only for it's price. A lot of them realize that this camera is one of the best, maybe the best in video in all DSLR video camera.

No contest. Worth $7000 more? I guess so.

As Old Corpse pointed out, if I could own the Leica I wouldn't be shooting with a GH camera.

But I can't and I do, and I'm very happy.

Anyway, thanks for the comparison.

great looking images - and thank you for posting

i really like how 50mm separates your people from their background - even when shooting from a distance - my 20mm pancake doesnt do that unless i am 5ft or less away

but i am not too sure about 50mm on a crop sensor working too well for handheld shots

- i reckon this may be a tripod / rig only lens

Thanks Reflex. I only had 30mn to shoot with the Noctilux, I did not have tripod and ND filter. The fast shutter speed did not help for final rendering.

Love the look of the noc on the GH2, amazing! I love how leica can make spherical abrasion look good.

Thanks for posting this!

Thanks for the test. Both look good, but obviously Leica looks more like the big ticket item, as it should. It's the low light where these behemoths should really shine, though.

Thanks Aki :) Badfully I did not have the Leica still, when the night arrived. :)

I would rather go with ...[h=1]Voigtländer (Noctilux) Nokton 50mm f1.1[/h]
for three times less money..
