GH2 Excessive colour noise / grain on GH2

Screen Shot 2012-01-10 at 9.36.31 PM.jpg Look at their shirts, 5DtoRGB helped a bit, but I've tried every correction I could think of, the blacks crush hard, and that's the only way to bring the noise down.

The compression on the shot actually seemed to have killed some of it.... odd.

Only thing I can think of is either ETC mode, or the iso bug. You said you weren't in ETC mode, and even then, the noise wouldn't be that bad. Can you first put it at iso 800, then put it to 360, and shoot outdoors again? Also, try one of the other modes? (vibrant, cinema)

I find smooth and nostalgia at -2 contrast to be noisier in general. I can almost always see noise in the shadows indoors w/ natural light.

Ok, thanks.
I'll try shooting in cinema mode today.

(It's 100% definitely not in ETC mode).

I tried some shooting today in CINEMA mode at 200 ISO. The footage is really dull. Don't like that mode at all.
I'll do some further testing when it gets darker and then test all the footage.

try vibrant and nature as well.

The screen grab I posted earlier in this thread was shot using mpgxsvcd's 42 Mbit hack in Smooth mode with everything set to "0".

1600 ISO | Smooth -2 | Canon 50/1.4 (Might've been the Nikon 50/1.8) @ 1.4 (or 1.8) | 5DtoRGB

Denoiser Mild Settings

Same settings with "Enhancement" or sharpening

Gonna get Neat Video today or tomorrow along with the batch copy of 5DtoRGB.

I shot some footage this last weekend with almost the EXACT same results in the black that you are showing. ISO was low since I was outside (don't remember the exact number) But my Film Mode was nostalgic, everything -2, Aquamotion Hack, 14-45 lumix lens, 1/50. 1080 and 720 look this noisy in the blacks.

Yet the weekend before I shot a wedding (again lots of black outfits) with sanity, and smooth everything -2. 1/50....and not nearly as much noise. Anyone have any suggestions? I also have a GH1, and I have never gotten results like this outside with low ISOs.

The image is really fantastic, great light.

But, the first image is just so noisy. The second image has cleaned up the noise nicely, but the banding (on the road) has become overwhelming.

Just wondering; with the footage on the second image are you seeing 'swirling' or moving macro blocking, or is the banding stable?

I know I'm pixel peeping here BTW, I'm sure this would not be a problem to an audience.

You'll definitely get the weird "amorphous blob" banding in a situation like this if you denoise too far.

I personally don't go much further beyond a chroma denoise, I like the character of it and am not afraid of it at all but for those that are, work with ze denoisers.

So how can those of us who can't immediately dish for Neat Video or a similar tool solve some of these noise issues?

Wow...what a difference.

Just be careful with your shots.

Come to think of it.... can't recall any Panasonic camera that didn't have an issue with noise (on some level). But....unlike some of you I get "realatively clean" shots out of my camera. But then again I don't shoot at extreme ISOs. Regardless I use Neat video on all of my shots (noise or no noise). There's already crazy detail in the image and you don't lose any with NV.

The issue is, as well, getting it out of your denoising program or NLE. I just realized those JPGs and PNGS still don't look as good as the FCP timeline. Not sure what's happening, but even exporting a straight up Quicktime I get something completely different than what's on my timeline showing on the Apple LCD and my Studio Monitor.

This is almost more trouble than it's worth, in a way.
Depends on how you use it. If you are a filmaker...then it's a perfect tool. But for every day run of the mill video....it might not be worth the pain of post work. IMO

I think so. It's going to be super subjective. I'm glad the noise is present and it doesn't bother me enough to be concerned but I know it will bother others.

Devon, what you could do is use a lower bitrate patch, actually, which should get you less noise at the expensive of detail on the lower range of the curve. You can also try doing noise reduction in camera to see if you like it.

I suppose my comment was a bit well, lacking in contribution, lol. There's plenty of evidence to show that the GH2 is suitable for the uses I'm wishing to employ it in, and perhaps it's a mixture of user error and a lack of having found the correct solutions. But having to burn out a DVD or do a private vimeo upload every time I want to check footage is going to be very prohibitive.
